Sometimes a dog’s name tells you everything you need to know—and Sweetheart truly lives up to hers.

She is a beautiful, confident girl with so much love to give. She has been patiently waiting for someone to look beyond the shelter walls and see what she could become with a family of her own.

Sweetheart does well with other dogs and older children. She’s ready to trade shelter life for a soft bed, peaceful nights, and a home where she will be loved, spoiled, and reminded every day that she belongs.

Please don’t let Sweetheart continue waiting. Somewhere out there is the family she deserves—maybe it’s yours. Even if you cannot adopt, sharing this post could help her reach the person who can. ❤️

We are never going to adopt our way out of the animal crisis.

After nearly 15 years in animal welfare, one thing has become painfully clear to me: our local shelters cannot fix this crisis by themselves.

Their job is to manage the overwhelming number of animals our communities continue sending through their doors. They are treating the symptoms of a much larger problem—and then we blame them when the kennels are full.

If we truly want things to change, the work has to begin long before an animal reaches the shelter.

We have to spay and neuter our pets. We have to educate people about responsible ownership. We have to help struggling families keep the animals they love. We have to support animal control, strengthen enforcement and hold irresponsible owners accountable.

Most importantly, we have to stop standing on the sidelines and expecting shelter employees and volunteers to carry this entire crisis on their shoulders.

The shelter is where we manage the crisis.

The community is where we change it.

Every one of us has a role to play. 🐾

In the middle of the night, Cormack was found tied to a pole—without food, water, or anyone to care for him. Abandoned, confused, and frightened, he had nowhere to turn. 💔

Thankfully, a concerned citizen called animal control. By morning, Cormack was safe at KC Pet Project—and his journey toward healing could finally begin.

Almost every inch of his fur was severely matted. His ears were filthy and badly infected, as you’ll see in the video. He’s only a few years old, but the condition he was in made it seem as though he had endured a lifetime of suffering.

What broke my heart most was the emptiness in his eyes.

But beneath all that pain, there was still a gentle spirit waiting to be seen. Cormack still wanted attention. He still welcomed kindness. When I offered him affection, he gave it right back. After everything he had been through, this sweet boy still wanted to trust someone. He still wanted a connection. 💔

The moment I met Cormack, I knew he deserved more than survival. He deserved comfort, dignity, and the chance to feel cared for. That’s why I knew I had to get him to my friends at Scenthound for the best spa experience of his life.

They call it wellness and hygiene. I call it a fresh start.

Tomorrow morning, a kind volunteer will drive Cormack to meet me at Scenthound on 135th Street. We plan to document his entire experience, and I have a feeling this could be one of the most remarkable before-and-afters we’ve ever shared.

More than anything, I want to see Cormack comfortable. I want to see those heavy mats lifted from his body, his ears receive the care they need, and a little light return to his eyes. I want him to feel the gentle care he should have known all along.

To my friends at Scenthound: thank you for your continued generosity toward shelter dogs in need. You give your time, your skills, and your hearts to dogs who have already gone without so much. I’m incredibly grateful to be able to call on you when I meet a dog like Cormack.

And thank you to the person who made that call, KC Pet Project, and the volunteer helping Cormack get there tomorrow. Every act of kindness has carried him one step farther from the darkness and closer to hope.

One of the hardest parts of being sober while working in animal rescue is learning how to feel everything I used to drink away.

For years, my way of managing my mental health was to stay as busy as possible. Keep moving. Keep helping. Keep myself from sitting still long enough to acknowledge what I was carrying.

Then, in the evenings, I drank.

For a while, I convinced myself that it worked. Until it didn’t.

The last five years of my drinking weren’t about having fun. I was using alcohol to medicate my pain. Some days, I drank to feel something. Other days, I drank so I wouldn’t have to feel anything at all. It had become the only way I knew how to deal with my emotions.

You occasionally see heartbreaking things on my social media, but there is so much you never see. The suffering. The situations we can’t fix. The animals we can’t get to in time. I tried to protect my followers from the worst of it, but I still carried it home.

And I didn’t know how to put it down.

Getting sober meant I had to begin learning how to process all of that. In many ways, it felt like starting over. The sadness didn’t disappear when I stopped drinking. I had to learn how to live with it without losing myself in it.

I’m still learning.

Today, I try to slow down and acknowledge what I’m feeling. I talk with people who understand this work. I ask for help. I’m learning that caring deeply about animals doesn’t mean I have to carry every painful experience alone.

I’m not writing this because I want anyone to feel sorry for me. I’m writing it because someone reading this may recognize their own evenings, their own exhaustion, or their own reasons for reaching for a drink.

I want you to know there are other ways to cope. There is support. You don’t have to wait until everything falls apart to deserve help.

Addiction exists within the animal welfare community, and we don’t talk about it nearly enough. We spend so much time trying to save lives that sometimes we struggle to admit when we need help ourselves.

I want to help change that. My goal is to keep this conversation open and help connect people in our field with assistance, understanding, and support.

The people caring for these animals deserve care, too. That includes you. ❤️

That is how long River has been waiting for someone to finally choose him.

River is a 4-year-old Bluetick Coonhound mix who arrived at Hickory Hollow Animal Refuge with another dog named Gracie. They had escaped from a home overrun with dogs and were found wandering near Goddard. Gracie has since been adopted—but River is still waiting.

More than 900 days without a home of his own. More than 900 days watching other dogs leave with their families while he remains behind.

River can be shy when he first meets someone, but please don’t mistake his hesitation for a lack of love. Once he realizes he is safe, he becomes an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog who loves cuddles and being close to his people.

True to his hound nature, River loves walking, exploring and following every interesting scent he can find. He enjoys splashing through puddles and creeks, although a swimming pool doesn’t impress him much! His favorite things include bones, squeaky balls and stuffed toys.

River is house-trained and kennel-trained. He can live with other dogs following a patient, proper introduction and tends to prefer females. He isn’t particularly interested in constant play—he is perfectly content simply sharing his space with another dog.

Because River has a strong prey drive, he needs a home without cats or other small animals.

River’s ideal family will be active but also understand the importance of quiet moments, love and plenty of cuddles. Most importantly, he needs someone patient—someone willing to give him time to adjust and learn what it means to finally belong.

After more than 900 days, River doesn’t need perfection. He just needs someone willing to give him the chance he has been waiting so long for.

For 150 days, Ares has watched people walk past his kennel.

He arrived at the shelter as a stray, but it was obvious that he once had a family. He had been loved. He had been cared for.

Surely, someone would come looking for him.

But no one ever did.

As a volunteer, one of the hardest things is watching an incredible dog get overlooked day after day. Ares is my favorite dog in the shelter. He is one of the reasons I continue showing up—even when I’m tired—because I know he is there, waiting for someone to show up for him.

I can walk him. I can love on him. I can remind him that he matters.

But I cannot give him the one thing he needs most:

A home.

Ares absolutely loves affection, and he has so much love waiting to be given in return. He is incredibly friendly with every stranger he meets. He has been friendly with other dogs, has done well with children, and walks beautifully on a leash. His only request is a home without cats.

But Ares has something working against him—his face carries the weight of the pit bull stigma.

People see him stressed inside his kennel. They see him barking and pacing, and they become afraid before ever giving him the chance to show them who he truly is.

Ares isn’t barking because he is a bad dog.

He is barking because he is begging someone to notice him.

He watches people approach and desperately tries to get their attention. He pleads for someone to stop, open his kennel door, and give him just one chance.

But nothing he does seems to be working.

At the end of every visit, I have to place Ares back behind that kennel door and walk away without him. He watches me leave—and he stays.

That moment breaks my heart every single time.

Ares does not need hundreds of people to want him. He only needs one person willing to look past the kennel, look past the barking, and look past the stigma.
