Leonardo da Vinci started each of his paintings with a wash of black paint. He said, “because all things in nature are dark except exposed by the light.”
In situations like this I tend to think, “What difference will posting on social media make?” My voice is small and insignificant. I can’t make any difference. But I’m doing what I can to educate myself, to see life from all perspectives, especially those that are different from my own. I’m trying to focus on what I believe, praying for the nation to be filled with peace, justice, empathy and love that surpasses understanding.
Martin Luther King Jr. says in his famous quote, “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a downward spiral of destruction.”
In the face of anger, judgement, and differing opinions, my impossible prayer is that we can set aside any dividing walls of bitterness. And see that we are all human beings each trying to live however we know best in such a dark, broken world. Da Vinci started each painting with a dark slate, then the light he added created the most beautiful masterpieces known to human history. Like MLK Jr, I believe love is the light that will most effectively expose the darkness. The kind of love that makes no sense, that shows kindness to your enemies, and open hands to the people who’ve been oppressed and voiceless. That’s the kind of love that transforms the darkness 🖤
If you got this far, thank you for taking the time to read my perspective. Have a wonderful day 🖤
