The Rosendale Trestle wasn’t built to be pretty. It was built to get the job done.

Thrown across Rondout Creek between 1870 and 1872 for the Wallkill Valley Railroad, this 940-foot iron monster stands 150 feet in the air and once held the title of the highest span bridge in America. Back then, plenty of people thought the first locomotive to cross it was going straight into the valley below.

Instead, it carried trains for over a century.

Freight. Passengers. Coal smoke. Steel wheels hammering across the bridge deck day and night. The trestle survived rebuilds, hard winters, failing railroads, and decades of neglect after Conrail shut the line down in 1977.

Most structures like this get torn down and forgotten.

Not this one.

Today the Rosendale Trestle still stands over the valley — scarred up, weathered, and tougher than ever. No trains anymore, but the bones are still there. A reminder of the men who built America’s railroads with rivets, sweat, and grit.

I'm currently painting NJT's 4219. This was her first excursion out in the sunlight since we laid down the silver and black.
Now that's she's back in the house, it's all detail work. Stripes, handholds, railings, non-skid, signage, reflective tape, etc.
