I love the creative challenge of building a gallery that actually reflects a couple's design choices, and turning a color palette and mood board into photos that capture the whole feeling of the day, not just the look of it.

What does that actually look like on a wedding day? I take the design board, color palette, and everything I've learned about the vibe the couple wants, and turn it into a scavenger hunt that runs all day long. I'm intentional about how I photograph the venue so that it actually reflects that specific wedding; I keep an eye out throughout the day for guest fashion that complements the color palette, or small details that reinforce the design. And I pay attention to how light, texture, and framing shape the overall feeling of the photos.

For this wedding, I pulled inspiration from their palette of lavender, peach, blush, and green, as well as the romantic, elegant garden-party feeling they were chasing. I leaned into the lush greenery at Gardens In The Gorge, the whimsical charm of the cottages, the elegance in their fashion, and event the river views and the sound of the harpist playing through the ceremony and cocktail hour.

The result is a gallery that feels alive and vibrant. Three dimensional. A complete story that actually transports you through the day, instead of a flat view of its highlights.

Most couples think an engagement session is about getting a few pretty photos for save-the-dates, but honestly, that's the smallest part of what it actually does.

Engagement sessions aren't required for every wedding I shoot, but here's what happens during one, beyond the photos. It's usually the first time you're in front of a camera together, which means it's also the first time those nerves and 'are we awkward?' thoughts show up. We work through poses and prompts until we find what actually feels natural for you two, and somewhere in there the awkwardness starts to wear off.

You figure out where to put your hands. What feels stiff vs what feels like you. And by the end of the session, you're feeling comfortable and carefree, just being yourself.

So when the wedding day comes around? Those first time nerves aren't showing up when you should be focused on being present. They already happened at your engagement session, in a much lower-stakes moment, and you walk into your wedding day more confident than when you started.

That's the REAL reason engagement sessions matter. The photos are a nice bonus. What matters more is that you get to work through the nerves before the day you can't get back!

Every couple who plans an outdoor wedding has the same fear: what if it rains?

When rain showed up in the forecast for McKenna & Cameron's outdoor garden ceremony, we shifted to a tented plan B and rearranged the day a bit, moving portraits to the front of the timeline, just in case the rain came early and we lost our shot at the garden.

Then the rain kept pushing back. And pushing back. By the time the ceremony was about to start, it looked like we might actually be in the clear. (I kept the umbrellas in reach anyway.)

The second McKenna stepped into view at the end of the aisle, the rain came pouring down and didn't let up until well into the reception.

She laughed and walked down the aisle anyway.

We moved family photos to a new spot, and McKenna & Coleman even stepped out into the rain with me for a few dreamy portraits.

Plans change. Weather doesn't ask permission first. But nothing about that day that actually mattered was lost.

Stone Haven was built by a photographer, which might be why every corner of it feels like it's own beautiful vignette.

Tucked into the hills of Section, Alabama, right above the Tennessee River, the whole property feels so intentional. Arched doorways. Real stonework. A dramatic staircase. A glass conservatory that catches the light from every direction. Somewhere between the front gate and the ceremony balcony, Alabama disappears completely and you could be just as easily standing in Tuscany.

It shows in the details, too. Every archway, every wall, every space was placed with a camera in mind.

Not every couple shows their love the same way. For example, M&W aren't huge laughs and big gestures, their love is gentle, sweet, and a little quiet. If I hadn't picked up on that during their engagement session, I might have approached photographing their wedding day wrong.

During our session together, I noticed their joy wasn't loud: it was long glances, quiet smiles, hands that touched without thinking about it. No big laughs, no dramatic poses. Just quiet, steady affection.

On M&W's wedding day, I didn't push for big, dramatic moments, or energetic playfulness. I leaned into what I'd already seen was true to them: gentler prompts, more watching, less directing, and let their real joy show up naturally.

The result? Their wedding photos felt just as effortlessly THEM as their engagement photos.

That's exactly why I encourage every couple to add an engagement session before their big day. It's not a warm up shoot. It's how I learn who you actually are together, so you never feel like just another couple on my calendar come wedding day.

The first time I walked the gardens at the Swan House, I half expected Elizabeth Bennet to come around the hedge mid-argument with Mr. Darcy.

That's not really an exaggeration. The boxwoods, stone terraces, and vines climbing up walls that have been there since the 1920's, all of it feels like it was built for storytelling.

We spent most of our time there just walking and talking, getting to know each other as we strolled through the gardens, except I happened to have a camera - and would occasionally stop mid sentence to excitedly photograph Hannah and Carter in one gorgeous spot or another.

And honestly, for those who say they don't want posed photos, I can tell you that the best photos, often my favorite photos, happen somewhere between the posed moment and the walk to the next spot, when you stop preforming for the camera and just exist next to each other.

By the end of the night, she had adorned every guest in flowers. You'll rarely meet a person as kind and giving as Caitlin and Adam is the perfect calm counterpart to her exuberance. Both are equally joyful and generous, qualities that absolutely shone out on their wedding day. The though and care Caitlin and Adam put into making sure their guests felt as celebrated as they did was incredible to witness. And, yes, Caitlin did tuck her wedding flowers in every guest's hair (which tickled me pink!).

A huge shoutout to the amazing vendors who worked tirelessly through the heat and humidity to bring the most perfect day to life for Adam and Caitlin's wedding at the Chapel By The Sea.
