Shooters,
Something that has come up recently, and more than once, is bullet l***s drying out and/or strange buildup, growth or film on bullets. The answer to the first is YES, bullet l***s made for black powder & smokeless will dry out and should be kept air tight when stored. The smokeless only l***s, usually made only of candle wax, can "get by longer" exposed, as there are no other moisturizing ingredients in the formula.
With respect to a film or bullets changing color is tin & lead oxidation which refers to the chemical process where these metals (typically in bullets, solders, etc.) react with oxygen to form metal oxides. These oxides change the metal surface and can tend to more easily stick to your barrel when fired, similar to the metal fouling noted when shooting wheel weights, which is attributed to the antimony in WW. Bullets will oxidize by themselves if not stored air tight. In my experience, the issue is accelerated with l**ed bullets, especially if left exposed to air. Anyway, here's some recommendations:
1. I try to never l**e bullets outside of two weeks before shooting.
2. For match prep, I keep cartridges in slip top boxes that are stored in Mil 50cal air tight ammo cans.
3. I store unl**ed bullets in plastic semi-air tight cartridge boxes and totally air tight as possible.
4. ALWAYS store bullet l**e air tight, in glass if possible. Mason jars work well.

Congratulations to Dutch Grawemeyer, winning the NMLRA King of the Hill award for topgun-high score for 2025. Dutch is a great target shooter and Marine veteran who saw the elephant. With memorial day coming please keep our vets and current service personnel in your prayers.

BPCR REGIONAL May Match, NMLRA- Friendship, IN

Special thanks to Executive Director Rod Scobee, and the NMLRA staff for their hospitality at the May BPCR Regional matches. Especially a BIG SHOUT out to NMLRA 1st VP Neil Eddington for giving shooters a tour of the Rand house(circa 1875), now the NMLRA Museum. Neils courtesy and taking the time to talk and show the shooters around was greatly appreciated. Lindsey Brown and the stat crew also did a great job in running the numbers and supporting Match Director Richard Wood. Attached are some pics of the museum and history that’s packed into the area. The 2027 BPCR Nationals are scheduled for Friendship and I would highly recommend that you make plans to attend starting now, you won’t be disappointed. It’s very hard to pack all the target shooting history and great people that I met in a small posting like this, so you’ll just have to attend next year.

BUTTE GUN CLUB NEWS

The Butte Gun Club is hosting the Montana State Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette Championship Shooting Match June 26-28.
This is a friendly match held annually bringing shooters and families from surrounding states and Canada together in camaraderie and connection to the outdoors in a traditional sporting event. (Event announcement and entry form attached).

Are you able to support our match this year with an award or door prize donation to be presented at the dinner ceremony Saturday evening? We are also looking for promotional material to display (banner) or provide (decals, stickers, catalogs, etc.). Donors will be both announced and posted at the match and through social media. The Butte Gun Club is one of the oldest organizations in America. The club traces its history back to the Butte Rod and Gun Club, which was organized in 1880. In 1895, the Rocky Mountain Rifle Club was formed with a majority of members from the Butte Rod and Gun Club. The Rocky Mountain Rifle Club affiliated with the NRA in 1909 and in 1910 built a new range at Rocker, Montana to accommodate increased membership. The Rocky Mountain Rifle Club and the Butte Rod and Gun Club merged under the name Butte Gun Club in 1925.
The BGC is a nonprofit corporation (W-9 attached) organized to encourage all shooting sports; educate members and the general public in the safe operation of fi****ms; and support Amendment 2 of the Bill of Rights to the Constitution of the United States.
