Hello Vintage Lovers!
As we loaded up the last of our shop from this beautiful building last week, we took a moment to reflect on our history in this grand historic building and we wanted to share some of that with you.
Throughout college and my career as an Interior Designer, I focused on Green Design. Preserving, Restoring, Reusing, Reclaiming and Recycling as much as possible. To be a sustainable Interior Designer, that rescues pieces from the past, given the opportunity to set up a vintage shop in this beautiful Art Deco building, wasn't just a dream, but literal perfection.
The original Jackson Storage building was just a small 10,000 sqft warehouse on the corner of Ogden(now Burlington Ave) and 6th Ave, completed in 1907. A visual reference for those who have been in our building; the Parking lot entrance and the door to the right of the lobby, were the original building. In the 1920s, architect Thomas Kingleey designed and supervised the construction of the 45,000 sqft building we see today, opening to the public in 1924. Its artistically ornate terracotta tiles of Portuguese and Moorish influence adorn the facade of this great Art Deco building. The building maintained its original function of storage for 119 years, adding additional storage to the horse and buggy Van Garage and to the horse stable house in back. It was also converted to additional units inside and an apartment upstairs.
The first warehouse Jackson Storage built, is located at 3611 W Cermak Rd, Chicago and received Landmark status in 2024. Unfortunately, ours did not and 2026 marks the end for the storage business that opened to the public in 1924 and the Antique Mall that opened in 1998.
Slide through our pictures of the building.
While I'm heartbroken to see this grand lady come down, I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to have been able to call this historical building home, even if it was just 9 years of its 119 year history. 💙
