Our favorite day of the month is approaching… Apliquick Club meets this Monday, August 10th! Don’t forget our new start time is 10:00.

Ciarra showed her awesome quilt that she personally designed for The Modern Quilt Guild's block challenge. She took a traditional block and spread the block's elements, in various forms, throughout the quilt. Pretty cool!

Here's a photo of most of our challenge participants along with their blocks. We had a terrific time seeing who made what block and learning about what inspired each person as they created their block. We look forward to seeing how the blocks are incorporated...will it be framed, will it be in a quilt, will it be a pillow?

Susan's challenge block won 3rd place! Susan adapted this sweet star & heart block pattern from a 10" to the 12" finished size. The most difficult part was adapting the center, floral star. The blue text was a fabric she had won years ago at Painted Pony 'n Quilts. It was just the perfect fabric to use, with text such as, Born in the USA, Bill of Rights, Freedom, Declaration of Independence.... Susan says "It just goes to show you, to hold onto fabric, because you'll never know where you might need it." This was the perfect block to utilize this text fabric. She's so glad she kept it.

Merlyn took 2nd place in our block challenge! She wanted to make a quilt to honor the 250th celebration while purposely using fabric from only her stash. First, she created a vintage Lone Star block for the center of her quilt. Then, Merlyn designed 12" blocks to surround the featured Lone Star Block. She hand-drew the applique motifs on each block. For the winning block , she drew inspiration from researching history books. She decided to make the eagle more representative of the United States seal. This block will be a central part of her quilt, possibly situated above the Lone Star block along side the additional two blocks seen in the next photo. Her intention with this winning block was to honor the people who fought for their freedom from England in the American Revolution. Her block certainly evokes a historical sense of the United States.

With the most votes, Maryanne took 1st place in our block challenge. Viewing her block's details, clearly shows why people are so enthralled with her block. Check out the photo details... you'll see embroidery, applique, raw-edge piecing, beading, hexies, and hand-drawn motifs...all done by hand!

Maryanne was inspired by her friend and several Australian artists who were creating art with the Slow Stitching method. She was so intrigued, that she just had to try it out in this challenge. Maryanne added that what she loved about this method was that there were no rules to it..."You could just stick whatever you want in a collage-like form." says Maryanne. She played with a multitude of background fabrics and just kept adding to her block. We are so happy she explored this new technique. Awesome block, Maryanne!
