7 months is often a very appropriate age to transition to their own room if that’s what feels right for your family. Research shows that room sharing for at least the first 6 months can help reduce the risk of SIDS, which is why many parents choose to wait until after this point before moving baby into their own space.
The good news? By 7 months, many babies are developmentally capable of sleeping very safely and successfully in their own room when safe sleep guidelines are followed. In fact, some families notice both baby and parents sleep more soundly with fewer disturbances from normal overnight noises and movements.
That said, being nervous is completely understandable. Moving your baby to their own room can feel emotional and daunting, especially if you’ve become used to having them close overnight. There is no ‘perfect’ age, the best timing is when:
• Baby is sleeping in a safe sleep space
• You feel emotionally ready
• The setup feels practical and comfortable for your family
• Safe sleep guidelines are being followed consistently
If you do decide to transition, you can make it feel gentler by:
• Starting with naps in their own room first
• Using a monitor for reassurance
• Keeping bedtime routines familiar and consistent
• Giving yourself a few nights to adjust too, often parents find the transition harder than babies do!
Every baby and family is different, and there is no one size fits all approach. The goal is always safe sleep and helping everyone get the rest they need.
