Gooood afternoon Lake Luzerne and surrounding communities! DID YOU KNOW? Did you know the true origin of Thrift shops? No? Well..........I am gonna tell ya! Waaay back in 1647 a Great, but money stricken, Scottish Lord by the name of Bruce the Thrifty sat forlornly at his desk on a cold and windy winters eve under the dim glow of a single candle pondering the pile of bills accumulated on its fine gold leaf marble surface. The bill collectors were hanging threats around his neck on a daily basis and the funds to pay for his wife and three daughters rabid spending at Bloomingdale's were just not to be had. When suddenly the candle flared and a Great voice boomed from above, "Bruce, just sell the stuff they never wear" And there it was, simple as that. The next morning after breakfast he commanded his wife and daughters to deliver to him all the clothes and shoes that had not been worn in a fortnight or more, commanded the stable boys clean and paint the barn, hung a great sign above stating, All are welcome and..... the rest is History. This (I swear) is a completely true, unfabricated accounting of the first thrift store, 'Bruce's Thrift Shop' circa 1647 Authors note; Some very minor liberties may have been taken in the retelling of this story...
