Harsh truth: “Being witchy” is not a spiritual practice.
It’s become an aesthetic, a vibe, a way to describe an interest in crystals, herbs, cartomancy, or spooky things. This also includes metaphysical shops, general retail and even grocery stores.
But for many/most people, witchcraft and earth based spirituality are not aesthetics. They are DEEPLY held beliefs, traditions, and ways of moving through the world. And fun fact, not all earth based practitioners dress in clothes adorned with moons or even in all black! Wild, I know.
Have you ever heard someone say they’re “Jewish-y” or “Catholic-y” when they actively practice those faiths? Probably not. We recognize those as legitimate spiritual paths.
Earth based spiritual traditions have existed for thousands of years across cultures and continents. They are living practices, not trends.
So the next time someone says, “I’m kind of witchy,” maybe ask what that means to them. Are they exploring? Learning? Practicing? Still figuring it out? If you are currently practicing an earth based practice this might be a great time to have a very meaningful conversation that leads someone to finding their personal truth and understanding who they are in a more authentic way. Not in a forced one.
There is nothing wrong with being curious. There is nothing wrong with being new. AT ALL. It’s about understanding what “being witchy” really means.
But let’s normalize respecting that for many people, these practices are not just a collection of herbs on a shelf or a deck on a coffee table. They are a spiritual path, a devotion, and a way of connecting to something larger than themselves. So, keep this in mind because on both ends an opportunity is being given for a space that can change the energy to something that offers purpose.
And purpose, is where we begin to shift the spaces we are stuck in. ✌️
