This was the front part of the house, south room. Once a open room, it was converted into a separated small kitchen and dinning room.

Over the yeas it had been unkept and it was filthy. It has all been torn out and will become one open room again.

It will serve as a second living space on the first floor, the Seymour room and will have a library vibe. Named after James Seymour who owned much of Lansing in the early days and was responsible for getting the Capital placed in Lansing.

Termites plague part of the 1847 home. We have opened the house up to replace lost structure and to do an extermination once the home is moved and set on it's new foundation.

There are other parts in the home that have damage but not to this extent.

I plan on doing a home tour video tomorrow of the second floor.

As we are opening walls, we are finding thick black dust in between every stud board. What is it?

It's soot from the non-stop wood fires from the 1800's and coal soot when they converted to the "new way" of heating. When combined with the plaster and drywall dust, we come home gray. We look like we are characters out of a black and white film. Yes, we are wearing masks, but it still gets into our ears and nostrils. 180 years of undisturbed accumulation, that's real dirt!

I cannot wait to be done cleaning this all out and I will never complain about the dust in my own home again.

Memorial Day; We took the added chimney blocks off at the roof and worked our way down. Years ago they raised the roof line and extended with cinder blocks.

The chimney is in the center of the house indicative of a Greek Revival. The bricks probably came from Grand Ledge, brought in on raft or horse and cart, they were rare in Lansing until the 1850’s. It had to be removed to move the house.

The holes in the chimney is where they had potbelly stoves. Most likley the one in the front was for heat and the one on the back side for cooking. They probably kept the door shut to the rear room in the summer to help keep the heat out from cooking.

You can see how big the timbers are now that the chimney is down to the foundation. It straddled the basement in the front portion and the crawl space in the rear. Also you can see the charded wall as they probabally had fires 24/7 and hot in the winter.

We are hauling the bricks to the recycler today, thank you Schlegel Sand and Gravel. The project took about 3 hours.

Thanks for checking in.
