We've been busy this week transforming closets and creating designs that maximize storage and make staying organized easier.

This is one of the closets we're about to install and resurrect! During our consultation we immediately spotted four major problems:

#1–Corner rods like this don't work. Clothes simple do not hang in a semi-circle. They become crowded, wrinkled, and difficult to access.
#2-The shelving lacks adequate support and will eventually sag or fall.
#3-The lower shelf serves little/no purpose. As a matter of fact, it interferes with clothes hanging properly, but even worse is how it makes what we do store on it disappear.
#4-This shelf is unsupported and won't withstand the weight it's expected to carry. These cheap supports are just that…. Cheap!

These are common shortcuts contractors take that sacrifice function for convenience. We're excited to transform this space into a closet that works for the homeowner, maximizes every inch, and makes them an organizer!

Watch and wait for the finished transformation!

One of the greatest blessings of my job is that the people I work with rarely stay "clients" for long—they become friends. My circle continues to grow, and with that comes both joy and heartache.

In March, I received a call from a woman who had just learned she had cancer and was facing major surgery within weeks. She was overwhelmed and worried about the condition of her home, knowing others would soon be coming and going to help care for her.

Together, we got to work.

Despite intense pain and limited energy, she pushed forward with incredible determination. We tackled every room in her house, sorting, decluttering, organizing, and creating order. We worked in short sessions over several weeks to accommodate her low energy and pain, spending about 15½ hours total together. By the end, everything had a place, important papers were organized, cabinets, closets, drawers….. everything in the entire house and the burden she had been carrying seemed lighter.

The day we finished, I prayed with her before I left. My last words to her were, "I love you."

Less than a week later, she was hospitalized due to complications unrelated to her cancer. She believed it was just a setback. Then came the text I never expected—she had passed away.

My heart broke.

But in the midst of that loss, I witnessed something powerful. Her home was in order. Her important documents were easy to find. Her child, now left to handle the unimaginable task of losing a parent, wasn't forced to sort through years of chaos while grieving.

That is why I share this story.

One day, every one of us will either leave this world or be left behind to handle the affairs of someone we love. What will we leave for those we care about? A house full of clutter and unanswered questions—or a gift of order and peace?

My friend gave her child that gift.

If you've been putting off organizing important papers, decluttering your home, or making things easier for your loved ones someday, start today. It's one of the most loving things you can do.

Rest in peace, my dear friend. Your courage, strength, and determination inspired me, and I will never forget you.

(This was her text to me as she was in the hospital.).

Both of these closets were 46” wide with a single wire shelf that was suppose to double as hanging and storage. This setup never works and I mean….never!

When the only storage is up high, it’s difficult to use while the space below is an open invitation for clutter.

The solution wasn’t organizational containers—it was a better design.

By adding a 17” adjustable shelving unit, we brought storage down to a more functional level and maximized every inch of space. Things like shoes now have a designated place instead of ending up in a pile, and the closets are far more organized and user-friendly.

Even better, both closets went from 46” of hanging space to 58” of hanging space. Crazy, right?

With a simple redesign, these two kiddos now have more functional closets that make staying organized so much easier.

This closet was in desperate need of a makeover and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to transform it. The placement of clothing has a huge impact on whether a closet feels spacious or cramped. Even though the organizing process was still a work in progress when this photo was taken, the difference is already remarkable.

Sitting here watching House Hunters when the buyers pulled up to a home in Columbus, GA. My husband and I immediately looked at each other and said, “We've been in that house!”

Back in 2014, we were invited to design and install a closet system there. So, of course, we waited to see if it made an appearance. Sure enough, 12 years later, that same closet system is on TV.

What are the odds? Pretty wild to see our work show up on House Hunters all these years later!

The expression “tons of stuff” took on a whole new meaning this week as I partnered with Superior Junk Removal LLC for probably one of the biggest jobs I’ve tackled in my 20+ years of organizing.

The task was to purge and move an entire commercial basement full of items that had literally been accumulating for years. And I mean YEARS! Everything had to be carried up a flight of stairs…..everything! Boxes of files, furniture, trash….. you name it, we hauled it!

Our 3 categories were:
-Trash
-Habitat donations
-Relocate to the first floor

The four guys from Superior Junk Removal worked like a bed of ants. They never slowed down and maintained the best, even fun, attitude throughout the entire process.

Pictures truly couldn’t capture the magnitude of this assignment because it was an entire basement with multiple rooms. To put things in perspective, between the 5 of us, we logged a combined 48+ miles walking from 7AM to 3:30PM when we finished the entire basement.

There were 4 dump trailer loads hauled away to the landfill totaling 19 tons. Yes…..19 TONS!!!! Not included in that weight was probably a ton or 2 more of countless boxes of files relocated to the first floor or the huge pile of random items donated to Habitat.

I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity, but even more thankful to have worked alongside the crew at Superior Junk Removal. I highly recommend them for any project you have been putting off tackling.

Teachable moment……

At first glance this closet looks great… until you zoom in on the corner rods. 😳

There’s no possible way to properly hang clothes with rods crossing one another like this.

Functional closets are always the result of thoughtful design.
