Scientists in Northern California say a pair of endangered California condors may be incubating the region’s first condor egg in more than 100 years. The two birds, released in Humboldt County as part of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program, appear to have nested high in an old growth redwood within Redwood National and State Parks. Researchers have not visually confirmed the egg, but GPS tracking data and the pair’s behavior strongly suggest incubation is underway.

The possible nest is an important milestone for condor recovery in far Northern California. California condors were pushed to the brink of extinction by hunting, habitat loss, power line collisions, and especially lead poisoning from bullet fragments in carcasses. By the 1980s, only 22 condors remained in the wild.

Recovery efforts through captive breeding and reintroduction have helped bring the species back. Today, hundreds of condors live in the wild, while additional birds remain in captivity as part of breeding programs. If this egg survives, it would mark a major step toward establishing a self sustaining condor population in Northern California once again.
