As I returned home from work one night last week, I so unpleasantly discovered that Ryan (my husband) had left one of our gates open to the pasture. Cows were EVERYWHERE! Some were in the barn harassing unopened feed sacks, others were next to my chicken coop making my hens lose whatever sanity they might have left. One was next to our calf pen causing an even bigger stir, and surprisingly enough a few stayed in the pasture watched all the action take place. I tried shooing the loose ones back in, but they scattered even more, losing direction just that much more.
I grabbed a feed sack, shook it a few times, and they came running, quickly filing back into the pasture where they belonged. They trusted that where I was leading would produce food. They looked forward to it so much in fact, that I practically got plowed down and trampled on all while I was trying to pour the cubes!
Food for thought..
I often think the phrase "gate open" can compare to the trials that we go through like the loss of a loved one, financial struggles, relationship issues, or even some of life's high points, such as a job promotion, getting married, having another baby, etc.. I believe God allows all of these things, whether they are good or bad, to test our true character and see how we react.
When God leaves a gate open in our lives, do we choose to draw closer to Him in the safety of His pasture despite whatever circumstances? Do we praise Him during the good times as often as we pray for relief during the bad? Or do we choose to test our limits and wander far, not caring about the distance we have put between ourselves and the main gate, losing sight of Him and what truly matters?
I'm thankful today that no matter how far I've wandered, God calls me back, welcomes me home with open arms, and I'm FORGIVEN!
1 Peter 2:25~ "For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls."
