Our replacement hive came in this morning and once the rain moved out Tim was able to welcome the new ladies home. This is a strong and happy hive! While waiting for the rain to clear I was reframing their brood box and making their sugar elixir in the kitchen and just the strong vibrstion buzz off this hive made me smile. So vibrant! These are Italian Honeybees; the worlds most widespread breed of the species. They are popular amongst greenhorn bee keepers as they are very chill and are good foragers. They are also less likely to swarm out on ya but, as we all remember the day our hive swarmed on camera for us, less likely doesnt mean wont lol. So now we host 2 bee species here - Buckfast and Italian and while it wasnt in the plan, if things go right (one can always dream) then when we split these hives it would bee possible for a hybrid mix of the 2 breeds and could prove to bee phenomenal. We shall see! We do have some supplies - snacks to meds to tools- on our wish list if you’d like to celebrate their homecoming with us! Find our wish list here and stay tuned for the new cast and crew of Days of our Hives, Chaos edition. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1OJ2Q9DLNOIHB?ref_=wl_share

If ya aint loading thousands of honeybees into the car after school drop off by 7:45am are you even living?! 😆 Welcome home! In a wonderful surprise our poastal carrier Wendy messaged us to let us know she had a mob of buzzin butts with our name on em at the post office. We were so relieved as Tim had spent yesterday trying to track them down and talking to the company. Bees can only survive five days of this kind of transit and then they’ll die and this was day four. No one could find them so we had assumed the worst —- turns out these girls were just flying under the radar! Lets get em to their new hive! We will keep ya posted and thank you Wendy for a good news morning!!

Way Back Wednesday. Heres Tim, on the right, having lunch with his mom and big brother. Heres the guy who, when hes not busy writing code and fixing the “world wide web”, hes out with me wrangling some animal or in his bee suit tending to the hives, or building a new enclosure, or fixing the wires, or cutting a new vent, or or or or….
Funny, he still looks at me that way when I am looking outside, sipping my coffee and say “Ya know, I was thinkin’ we could…”🤣

While it may not look like it (especially now with the ducks) we run a clean ship here at the farm. We have 7 waterers - from buckets to bubblers to auto fills and pools - and ALL get deep cleaned during the week by me along with being rinsed out 2-3x a day! Many many many problems can be avoided by keeping feed and water containers clean. A lot of times when I am consulting at another farm or homestead, I will ask “When was the last time you bleached your feed bins and water containers?” And I get the blink blink look so we start there! I remind them, just because these are outdoor animals doesnt mean less cleaning - many times it means more! If youd like to help us run this squeaky clean ship we have some items on our amazon wish list that can do that! Visit it here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1OJ2Q9DLNOIHB?ref_=wl_share

I had a very glamorous Mothers Day and I hope all of the moms out there had the day they so very much earned ❤️ Yesterday I was given a beautiful afternoon with my family, wrapping up a near flawless vacation. Tim treated us to the Mothers Day tea at Blithewold Manor. While it may seem a little bizarre that a rough and tumble farmer gets starry eyed over tiny tea cups, macarons and just delicate, fanciful events - I dont recall ever having a setting on myself called “normal” so it tracks with my usual oddness and thats ok. I assure you I clean up well and didnt wear my muck boots and work gloves to the Manor. It was absolutely beautiful. From every cup and scone to dollop of clotted cream - it was a delight and dazzling. I love old homes, from the decorating of them to preserving the woodwork to a simple glass doorknob I will notice and comment on. I love just thinking about who may have stood right where I stand today- in this very spot. The lives, the joys, the celebrations, the - everything - that has passed these halls and still it stands waiting for more being preserved by hardworking people that care. The gardens were incredible even though this spring has been difficult on our annuals. I left envious of the oodles of chicken free space they have to create such endless gardens with rare if not impossible to find flowers and trees. The trees. I could have stood thete all day and just looked at their sensational size. Theyre literally record breaking. Unbelievable and a must see and experience. As a small business I am adamant on positive feedback and word of mouth advertising as the best way to pay it forward to a local businesses. I have wonderful time at the manor and I would recommend a visit if not to iust pass along in the gardens but perhaps catch a special event they are hosting.
