The Reflecting Skin
“Innocence can be hell.”
A disturbing drama where a series of real-life horrors are perceived as supernatural through a child’s point of view. The strong cinematography showcases beautiful fields of wheat, and the film takes place mostly in the light, despite exploring the darkest sides of humanity in its 95 minutes.
While it isn’t scary, it is unsettling throughout, and the intense score only highlights that fact. My main complaint is that some of the acting is over-the-top. I also would’ve liked a couple of questions answered, though I didn’t mind piecing together other aspects. Between the ambiguity and the religious symbolism, it not only created a surreal atmosphere, but it made me feel that more would be uncovered with subsequent viewings. Was it the greatest? No, but it offered a dark, different flavor of horror where few other movies reside.
