Cheyney’s Legacy in the Fight for Voting Rights

Today, as we cast our votes in the 2024 presidential election, we honor the legacy of those who fought relentlessly for African American voting rights, a right that was once denied. Cheyney, known in its early days as the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY), played a crucial role in this battle for equality. Its graduates became the leaders and activists who fought against voter suppression and inspired generations to stand for justice.

One prominent ICY alum, Octavius V. Catto (Class of 1858), was a central figure in the Equal Rights League, an organization devoted to Black suffrage and anti-segregation. On October 10, 1871, Catto was tragically assassinated while defending the right to vote amidst violent election day riots aimed at silencing African American voices. Despite the tragedy, Catto’s sacrifice became a rallying cry, and ICY continued to produce activists and educators who stood at the forefront of civil rights.

Under leaders like Catto and Jacob C. White, Jr. (Class of 1857), ICY graduates worked tirelessly to advocate for the Fifteenth Amendment, securing voting rights for Black men. They partnered with abolitionist allies, lobbied Congress, and educated communities, proving that Cheyney has always been a catalyst for change.

Today, we remember the sacrifices of those who came before us. Their courage empowers us to continue advocating for justice and equality at the polls and beyond.
