A little bit about the milk glass "ring of fire": If you’ve ever held a piece of vintage white opalescent glass up to the light and seen a warm amber-orange glow along its edge, this is the "ring of fire"!
Old-school manufacturers achieved this look by adding real bone ash, fluorite, or cryolite to the molten glass batch. As the glass was molded and cooled, the outer edges cooled faster than the thicker center, causing microscopic crystals to form. These crystals scatter light, creating that sunset-like glow.
Modern manufacturers use less expensive chemically uniform ingredients to turn the batch a solid white. This glass does not have the same opalescent property as older vintage milk glass. "Newer" vintage white glass pieces are still beautiful, but do not have the same "ring of fire" as older vintage pieces.
