Instruction on the M3 anti tank gun. This was not powerful enough against Japanese armour and it came to be used instead in an infantry supporr role. Special canister shells were designed to this end. The instructor and men are wearing both the old blue denim overall and the new pattern in light green herringbone twill.

Shanghai 1937. U.S. Marines and British troops on guar ehind a sandbaggea barricade. The officer, seen from the side, wears the period field uniform of M1917 helmet with cap ornament, breeches, light cotton khaki shirt and field boots. He has been partly reconstructed on the figure at left. The equipment comprises a M1910 belt with suspenders, canteen, side arm holster and first aid packet pouch. He is also equipped with a pair of binoculars and map case dating from 1917-18. This was the case with most of the overseas Marine’s equipment.

At Tarawa, on the remains of the trading wharf. Medical personnel, distinguished by the white discs painted or their utilities and helmets, busy themselves amongst the ammunition boxes. The man in the centre with hands on hips wears an Army field jacket. On the right we can see a fire mounted ammunition cart. The Marine with his back to the camera has a Thompson SMG magazine carrier. The camouflage helmet covers seem to be worn indifferently on either side, perhaps for identification purposes.

Iwo Jima 1945. The men of the first wave begin to move inland. This BAR gunner is still heavily loaded, the Army M3 lightweight gas mask will be quickly jettisoned and its carrying case used to carry grenades and ammunition. The rifle cleaning rod attached to the haversack will be useful on account of the pervasive volcanic sand. The M2 jungle first aid kit held on the belt is Army-issue.
