Saw something today that really had me shaking my head. Some people just cant be themselves! Not only do they misrepresent who they really are and their place in history, they misappropriate an entire style of dance that was not created by them.
"The Campbellock" aka "Locking" was created by Don "Campbellock" Campbell, in 1970, at LA Trade Tech College, Downtown Los Angeles.Yes, people added on to it, thru their own signature movements and unison dances that were "Lockified" to fit into routines for performances. But it's foundation, philosophy, and essence, is all Don "Campbellock" Campbell.
I am saddened, but not surprised. This type of stuff has been going on for over 40yrs. I just feel bad for all the students of this dance, both new and old, who have been fed lies, misinformation and half truths, all in the name of self-preservation, self-relevance, and financial gain. Whether it be about their closeness to Don Campbell, their place in history, their relevance in history, or the dance's place in the civil rights movement.
The dance has nothing to do with the civil rights movement. Certain People have said things regarding the teaching of his dance like- Don was dead, retired, had no, interested in teaching his dance, allowed someone( friend or relative) to teach the dance in his place, didn't know how to get in touch with Don, and even pretended to be him.
I can't change the perception that people have about him. Just provide the accurate information, regarding him and his dance, so people can decide for themselves.
