Willie Smits—founder of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation—has spent decades rescuing and rehabilitating orangutans, restoring forests, and protecting one of the planet’s most intelligent primates.

But one encounter reminded him just how powerful—and unpredictable—they truly are.
A fully grown orangutan suddenly grabbed him by the neck and head. Pulled him in. Held him there.
No struggle. No escape.

Orangutans are immensely strong—capable of crushing bone with ease. Smits understood the stakes instantly. Any sudden movement, eye contact, or resistance could trigger aggression. So he did the only thing he could: nothing. He stayed completely still.
For three hours.
No control. No leverage. Just waiting—while the animal decided what would happen next.

And then, just as suddenly as it began… it ended. The orangutan let go and walked away. No attack. No fatal outcome. Just silence—and the realization of how close it had come.

Smits has built projects like Samboja Lestari, turning barren land into thriving rainforest and earning international recognition. But in that moment, none of it mattered.
