Checked in on the Hot Rod Jeepney project yesterday . The kids came along to bring some fun energy to the shop and see what another one of their cool Titos is up to. Noel isn’t wasting any time, the 454 is already mocked up in the chassis and the front end is back on.

We are also proud to have join the project! (Thank you for connecting us). She will be following along with the progress and planning a paint scheme that brings our 🇵🇭 culture into this Jeepney. She recently completed an all women art show .

Lots of inspiring conversation and creative process yesterday. Stay tuned. ✌️❤️🏎️

Early last year there were conversations with the crew about this project. A chassis was acquired soon after, but all focus and energy was on finishing the bike they were building for the Mooneyes Hot Rod show in Yokohama last December.

A few weeks ago Matt and Noel came by our Night Shift Midweek Machines. They caught me as I was closing up shop to get my kids home by bedtime. We didn’t get to chat much at all, but Matt asked me if I had some time to come by their shop soon - they wanted to show me something. I had a gut feeling and was excited. I cleared my following Wednesday schedule and shot down to Stanton with to see if my feeling was correct. There it was. The hot rod Jeepney. Custom tube chassis, coilover suspension, disc brakes mocked up with steelies and slicks in the rear. Hand shaped over fenders were in progress. The roof was chopped 5” for that sleek California kustom look. A big block 454 was sitting outside ready to be rebuilt and stuffed into this 1955 Willys Jeep chassis.

The Jeepney - a byproduct of American military Willys Jeeps that were left in the Philippines after WWII. Symbols of Filipino independence from colonialism, resilience, creativity, and ingenuity. Low fare public transportation for the people, by the people. To see one in this hot rod form was mind blowing and inspiring. What a blessing to be one of the first to lay eyes on this unique project. This feels much bigger than a kustom hot rod build. This is a statement of what it means to be Filipino + American - in a time where the immigrant experience has been threatened and minimalized its so important to put a build like this on the main stage. We’ll be following along closely and doing what we can to assist in the build and documentation...with pride 🇵🇭✊

During my interview with NHK on Sunday, they asked me two questions that made me think and realize a few things. They asked how long we’ve been doing Sunday Service - and to their surpise, I said we just started last November. This event may be relatively new, but Makina has been around for 5 years now - which I just realized. To add to that, a lot of these friendships and bonds amongst people in the neighborhood go back decades.

They also asked if everyone that shows up knows each other. I took a look around and condfidently said yes. At some point in time we have all hung out - had cocktails by while hanging out at , driven the 110 together from Chinatown to Pasadena, celebrated new years , stood in the same line at Fosters Freeze for ice cream, watched the Craft of Speed documentary by together, shared a basket of chili cheese fries, participated in photoshoots with , driven Angeles Crest and the backroads of the Santa Monica Mountains with , had breakfast burritos , cheered with morning beers , joked over a quick lunch break , watched the Dodgers win the World Series and took pictures in front of the mural by . The list goes on. Yes we all know each other. Yes this is a real community. 🙏🏽🤝🫡

We’ve had a hell of a past few weeks and we want to thank you all for your continued support and enthusiasm. Having bless the neighborhood with their presence was validating to say the least. What an amazing day for Northeast LA. That being said, we will be taking a much deserved spring break this week! NO MIDWEEK MACHINES TOMORROW. Enjoy some quality time with the family, and we will see you all again next week! ✌️❤️🏎️

🏁 NORTHEAST LA to HAWAII 🏁

Whenever there is great energy and enthusiasm around an event, it provides an opportunity to do something purposeful - the “service” part of Sunday Service. We are anticipating a great turnout this Sunday so to commemorate the day, we had design a collaborative event t-shirt for us.

In recent conversations with Tad Matsuno and our family on Oahu, we decided it would be appropriate at this time to donate a portion of the proceeds from our t-shirt sales to the - a 501C3 non-profit that is leading the flood relief efforts in Hawaii by providing community services, organizing the collection of resources and distributing accordingly. The t-shirts will be available this Sunday in the Makina Parts & Service shop. With every purchase you will be sending love and support to the communities impacted by the recent flooding in Hawaii. ✌️❤️🏎️
