A fast-moving brush fire broke out this morning near Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Vista Sorrento Parkway in Sorrento Valley in Northern San Diego.
The fire was reported around 9:20 a.m. and quickly grew as crews battled a rapid rate of spread. By late afternoon, officials reported approximately 90 acres burned with 40% containment.
Evacuation orders and warnings were issued for neighborhoods near Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, with residents told to leave immediately if they were in mandatory evacuation zones. A temporary evacuation point was established at Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park.
Sorrento Valley Boulevard was closed between Vista Sorrento Parkway and Camino Santa Fe as multiple agencies worked the incident. Smoke was visible across surrounding communities, and air quality advisories were issued for sensitive groups.
As of this evening, many evacuation warnings had been lifted, though some evacuation orders remained in effect.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
