The Hñähñu are among the earliest settled inhabitants of the central Mexican highlands. While often referred to as the Otomí, Hñähñu is the proper autonym used by the community in the state of Hidalgo.

A defining moment in their modern history occurred in the 1960s. Following a severe drought in the Sierra de Tenango that devastated local crops, the community in Tenango de Doria turned to their artistic heritage as a survival strategy. They adapted ancient motifs from local cave paintings into the vibrant, multicolored thread-work known today as Tenango embroidery.

These patterns are a visual record of Hñähñu cosmology. The stylized birds, deer, and florals represent a deep connection to the natural world and the community’s resilience in the face of environmental hardship. Today, this craft remains a primary method for preserving Hñähñu stories and cultural identity.

How to pronounce Hñähñu: [NYAH-nyoo] The “Hñ” sound is similar to the “ny” in “canyon.” It is spoken with a nasal vibration, reflecting the unique phonetic structure of the language.

World Heritage Day is about protecting and celebrating cultural heritage around the world. The places, traditions, and stories that shape who we are.

It always hits a little different for me.

I’m raising a mixed heritage family. Mexican, Korean, Black. It shows up in our everyday. What we eat, how we celebrate, the questions my kids ask.

I want them to grow up seeing culture woven into daily life. It shouldn’t feel separate. Occasional. Something you have to explain.

So I’m helping them live in it. Not overthinking it. Just helping them experience it as part of who they are.

That’s really where Mixed Up Clothing comes from.

Clothes that reflect real life. Blended, layered, connected. The way our kids actually grow up.

A couple things I’ve learned:
• World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on April 18
• It was created by UNESCO to protect cultural heritage across the globe
• There are over 1,100 World Heritage Sites around the world

Throwback Thursday ✈️🇰🇷
A few highlights from our Korea trip: Busan, island hopping, palaces in Seoul, hanboks, Jeju, Hello Kitty World, Doosan baseball, street food, markets, and so many moments that helped our kids connect more deeply to their Korean heritage.

More than a trip, it was a chance to learn, celebrate, and experience culture in real life.

Happy International Women’s Day to the incredible women whose leadership, resilience, creativity, and care inspire me every day.

Today I want to say thank you to all the women who pour into their work, their families, their communities, and their purpose, often all at once.

Thank you to the founders, mothers, mentors, advocates, artists, educators, and changemakers who keep showing up and making a difference.

Your work matters.
Your voice matters.
Your presence matters.

I’m grateful for the women who lead boldly, love deeply, and inspire others simply by being who they are. Today we celebrate you and all that you continue to build.

Please use today to honor a woman whose work has inspired you. Tag her, thank her, and let her know her impact is being felt.

On a personal note, these are just a few of the women I’ve learned from and been inspired by. I’m grateful for their wisdom, leadership, and leading by example.

Happy International Women’s Day!
