The definition of zero waste, according to the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA), is as follows:

“Zero waste: The conservation of all resources using responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.”

That is to say, to do zero waste is not realistic. Zero waste is not just an end goal but a foundation of principles guiding us to strive towards eliminating waste through any stage of the chain, from resource extraction and production to consumption, including the management of discarded materials. The overall goal is to close the loop, which allows for redefining the entire concept of waste and ensures that resources remain in use long before being returned to the earth again with little to no environmental consequences.

Zero waste is not realistic, but with intention, we can strive to do better with every effort we can.
