Lando Norris still has hopes of challenging Max Verstappen for the Formula 1 title this year despite losing out to the Red Bull driver in a grand prix he felt he should have won for a second consecutive time.

The McLaren driver crossed the line at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix just two seconds behind the world champion.

The rueful agony on his face afterwards reflected the reality that, as Norris himself put it: "I should have done better today."

The number has come down while the stock has risen immeasurably.

A move to Chelsea came in 2017 for the teenager, in a switch that grabbed headlines north of the border as Rangers lost one of their brightest prospects.

The deal was done just after his 16th birthday, with his senior debut coming under Frank Lampard just two years later.

Billy Gilmour’s football journey is one not travelled alone.

Last Wednesday afternoon in Frankfurt Airport's Terminal A, a platoon of Tartan Army foot soldiers were readying themselves for the final leg of their journey. Among them, was the Gilmour brigade.

A clutch of number 14s on the back of Scotland strips moved through the place, the same name centred above them in homage to one man.

James Maddison will not be included in England's 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

The Tottenham midfielder was called up by Gareth Southgate to the provisional 33-man selection.

He featured in England's friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, coming off the bench in the 3-0 win at St James' Park.

A roller-coaster first season in the Saudi Pro League for Steven Gerrard ended on Monday. After a good start, a worrying run of just one win in 12 resulted in concerns for the Liverpool legend's job before his Ettifaq side rallied to finish sixth.

However, challenging the ‘Big Four’ was never going to be easy. In June 2023, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr of Riyadh, and Jeddah giants Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad, were taken over by the same Public Investment Fund that also owns Newcastle United.

Crystal Palace sealed a first league double over Manchester United with a rampant 4-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise ran 20 yards under no challenge to eventually slot beyond Andre Onana to put Oliver Glasner's side in the lead after 13 minutes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta surged beyond Johnny Evans to finish emphatically for his sixth goal in a row on home turf.

Tyrick Mitchell tapped in from close range after a fine cross by Adam Wharton in the 58th minute and French youngster Olise capitalised on a Casemiro mistake to power a strike beyond a wanting Onana.

From the first minute, Glasner's men looked full of intent against a United side who failed to turn up at Selhurst Park.

As a defensive unit, United put in one of the worst performances of the season with Casemiro and Evans becoming their 14th centre back partnership used this campaign.

'Under performing' Man Utd 'one of worst coached teams in league'
Eberechi Eze and Olise were given the freedom of the pitch to control the play and caused United trouble on numerous occasions.

Erik ten Hag's side threatened in a couple of moments with Casemiro twice having goals ruled out - the first for a foul on Dean Henderson and the second for offside.

Odsonne Edouard almost rubbed further salt in the wounds but his injury-time effort struck the upright.

With title-chasing Arsenal next up, United must greatly improve to avoid another thrashing.

No European football for United a possibility
At one stage in the season, Ten Hag's side looked as though they could put pressure on Aston Villa for a Champions League spot.

That dream is long gone and United are now at risk of missing out on qualifying for any European competition next season.

They must either finish seventh in the Premier League to secure Europa Conference League football or beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to seal a Europa League place.

One win in seven has seen United slide down the table into eighth and their fixtures do not get any easier with league leaders Arsenal visiting Old Trafford on Sunday.

A defeat by this scoreline can be hugely damaging but for those United fans who made the trip to Selhurst Park on a Bank Holiday Monday, it is the manner in which the players seemingly looked disinterested that will hurt the most.

Wharton an outsider for the England squad?
All eyes have been on United's talented youngster, Kobbie Mainoo, and rightfully so but it is hard to ignore the performances being put in by midfielder Wharton since his January move.

Wharton, 20, has impressed since day one at Selhurst Park after his £18m move from Blackburn Rovers on transfer deadline day.

Up against England internationals Mason Mount and Mainoo, Wharton shone with his slick passing between the lines and combativeness in defence.

Positionally, Wharton is excellent. Especially for someone at such a tender age. He has the ability to know exactly where to be on the pitch and when it is best to release the ball for a team-mate.

The former Blackburn man has been a huge addition to a Palace side who have won four of their past five.

A fantastic cross for Joachim Andersen to set up Mitchell's goal was just a small sample of the quality Wharton brings.

England boss Gareth Southgate was in attendance in London with a preliminary squad for Euro 2024 set to be announced on Tuesday, 21 May and with the Three Lions short of players in the mould of Wharton, could a shock inclusion be on the cards?

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes seem all but over after Michail Antonio scored to rescue a point for West Ham at London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring just before the break when he rose highest to meet Mohammed Kudus' cross into the area as Liverpool showed little evidence that their Merseyside derby loss in midweek had done much in the way of spurring them on.

But the visitors were much improved in the second half and Andy Robertson equalised when he scored from Luis Diaz's low pass into the penalty area.

They were then rewarded for their pressure when Cody Gakpo's effort from a corner ricocheted off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Ar**la before finding the back of the net.

It looked like they were on their way to bouncing back from back-to-back defeats in the league until Antonio's thumping header put the Hammers back on level terms.

Liverpool sit third in the table with three games remaining, two points behind leaders Arsenal, who face Tottenham on Sunday, while Manchester City are second but have two games in hand.

Liverpool's title hopes appear to be all but over, with the Reds relying on both of their title rivals to slip up to get back in the race.

Nottingham Forest will be offered the chance to privately hear VAR audio from three penalty claims in their match against Everton last Sunday.

On Monday, the club called for the audio between video assistant referee Stuart Attwell and on-field official Anthony Taylor to be released publicly.

Forest were furious after three penalty appeals were rejected in the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park, which kept them just a point above the Premier League relegation zone.

The rulings sparked an angry post on the club's X account, where Forest said they were "considering their options" over "extremely poor" refereeing decisions.

It is understood that refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) will give the club the opportunity to hear the audio in private, as it would with any other club making a similar request.

No decision has yet been taken on whether this audio will feature in the next edition of 'Match Officials Mic'd Up', a Premier League Productions programme that analyses VAR decisions from previous games, which will air next Tuesday evening.

The first legs of the Champions League quarter-finals have delivered.

And, none more so than Barcelona's trip to Paris St-Germain as the five-time winners came from behind to earn a 3-2 victory before next Tuesday's second leg.

Former Leeds winger Raphinha shone in Paris, as Kylian Mbappe failed to impress.

There were also some record-breaking teenagers in Barcelona's side, who showed brilliant resolve in the face of a hostile Parisian crowd when they were trailing.

When Arsenal spent £100m to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice last summer there was a suggestion in some camps that the Gunners had overpaid.

But those voices have quietened as the England international, with some brilliant performances in a more attacking position, has helped fire Arsenal to the top of the table with 10 games to go.

Maybe his biggest test yet will come on Sunday when they visit title rivals Manchester City, who also tried to sign Rice last summer and had a bid of £90m rejected.

The Gunners may be top of the Premier League - but they were in the same position after 28 games last season and fell away - so will Rice help them get over the line? Arsenal, Liverpool and City are only separated by a point in a gripping three-way title tussle.

So what has Rice changed at Emirates Stadium this season?

While Chelsea have endured another largely forgettable season marooned in mid-table, for Cole Palmer it has proved a coming of age.

The 21-year-old, who left Manchester City to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, scored one goal and made another in the Blues' 3-2 win over Newcastle on Monday.

He now has 19 goal involvements in 2023-24 and has both scored and assisted in five different league games this campaign, more than any other Premier League player.

Gareth Southgate was watching in the stands as Palmer produced a man-of-the-match display to inspire his team's victory against the Magpies - but has the England manager seen enough to include him in his squad for this summer's European Championship?

"He's perfect for all types of football, but certainly international football where you need real class and composure in the final third," said former England defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

"I always think the very best players run with their head up so they can release it at the right moment - they always look like they've got time in the most difficult area of the pitch, where it's most frantic.

"Palmer's so precise in his work for someone so young. I always think of younger wingers being erratic in their early years but he's just not that. He's class."

Palmer, however, is just happy to be part of the England conversation having only made his debut for the Three Lions in November, winning the first of his two caps.

"If you were talking at the start of the season that I'd have a chance of going to the Euros I wouldn't have believed you because of the position I was in," he said.

"I'm not really looking ahead to that. We'll see what happens in the summer."
