Today we are assembling besoms - harvest brooms made of herbs and seeds. Across cultures, brooms and herbs have long been used in rituals to sweep away negativity and invite blessings. While we all recognize the spooky Halloween witch with her broomstick, it’s worth remembering that witches were once wise folk; keepers of herbal knowledge and sacred space. Their besoms weren’t just for flying, but for clearing and preparing spaces for magic.

Our besoms are protective charms, meant to hang in a doorway or special place. We used cinnamon for safety, rose for love, corn for fertility, eucalyptus for health, bay leaf for good fortune, and lavender for peace. But you can use what you have! Raid your garden and tea drawer, look up the magical properties, and meditate on them while you assemble your besom with sticks and string.

They look beautiful, smell amazing, and invite a little bit of magic into your home. They also give you a reason to finally buy the seasonal cinnamon whisk at !

Obsessed our final apple head dolls! Over six weeks, we carved, dried, dyed, stained, stitched, stuffed and styled these little masterpieces. These treasures are a heritage folk craft that can last over a lifetime if you’re lucky. So we mounted the “dolls” on dowels, honoring their role an heirloom versus a throwaway craft.

It’s super fun to see Canyon Arts finding its voice; one that’s seemingly rooted in the same values of our previous incarnation, the clothing company Merna Maita. (If you’re new here, feel free to scroll back in the feed. We haven’t had he heart to archive our past!) We’re here to slow down, get lost in the art of making, find joy in the simple things, use what you’ve got, and create something that has the potential to be long lasting.

These dolls were made by super cool kids ages 6-10. But wouldn’t this be a fun project for adults, too? Any grown-ups here looking for an art class???
