She trains horses, but that almost feels too simple a way to describe it. There’s something quieter going on an understanding between horse and human that feels instinctive, almost spiritual.

Some people carry a kind of confidence that doesn’t need announcing. Gem has that in spades.”

A wrangler on the Snake River. A wheeler and dealer by nature, with the smile of a man who knew something you didn’t.

“Out behind the bucking chutes in Dubois, Wyoming, we found Luke Garrison a dusty local fresh off the rodeo circuit, quietly smoking a cigarette.

A Wyoming native, Luke spends his days operating heavy machinery and doing his best to stay in one piece. We talked only briefly, but some encounters linger longer than others.

That’s why we called him Lucky Luke.”

“Nick Turner has become a friend. A painter, cowboy, photographer, and artist in the truest sense.

There’s a gentleness to Nick, and a constant desire to explore the edges of himself to make things from a place that feels honest and entirely his own. He’s what I imagine a true renaissance man to be: someone who can mend a fence in the morning and make a beautiful image by afternoon, without seeing much distinction between the two.

When we first met at DCR in Wyoming, I saw his work and was floored. There was an immediate kinship a feeling that I’d somehow found a long-lost creative brother.

His way of seeing the world has stayed with me, and continues to inspire both myself and the world of NF.”

“Hope and her boyfriend Cody were hanging around the stands when we arrived in Dubois. We struck up a conversation and quickly realized this was a new love, still in its beginning.

Cody told me he’d seen Hope across the room one night and simply walked over and asked her to dance. There was something about it that felt from another time a little lost chivalry, a little courage, and that youthful instinct to follow your heart before your head has the chance to interfere.

I hope they’re still together somewhere“
