Really enjoying all this lately, making me think of my favorite track (this profile’s namesake) from seminal second Untrue . Once an anonymous he made a name for himself with the release of his self-titled debut on , presenting a forlorn strain of (long before it reached shores and became the ubiquitous gentrified force it is today. With the momentum his debut garnered, he quickly set out to record something intentional, attempting to create something and , sounding like taking apart some sort of intricate and putting it back together. The new songs, too dark and , sent the into a . Hoping to cheer himself up, he scrapped those tracks and began to something and utilizing samples with a rough and ready sort of . Utilizing found sounds in a rhythmic way (jangling keys used as hihats, rain and muck bubbling under the surface, a sounding like balmy gusts of wind preceding an ) he created tracks that bounced and flitted around the room, something and flickery that’s been described as “downcast euphoria”, which was ultimately released as #2007 ‘s Untrue. His identity was shrouded in mystery until Untrue was nominated for a Mercury Prize. It went on to influence acts like , to hybrid electronic band Moderat - reshaping the and imbuing it with the type of melancholy and two-step rhythms that spawned a new generation of post-dubstep producers, a truly uniquely . Even though he never followed up that second LP with a proper third record, he went on to release numerous singles and EPs that suggested a format that was more ‘multi-suite’, rather than a traditional album. Those tracks were varied and highly emotional - it was like an album condensed into one lengthy song. 10 years later, a track like Ghost Hardware will always remain a source of reflection and comfort for generations to come.
