Carbon black produces 3.3 tons of CO₂ for every ton manufactured. BioBlack has a net negative carbon footprint.

Carbon black is derived from petroleum refinery byproducts. BioBlack is made from FSC-certified wood waste, processed in a closed-loop system powered by its own renewable energy.

Carbon black carries classified carcinogens. BioBlack has non-detected PAHs, verified by third-party analysis.

Carbon black has an ugly end of life.

BioBlack turns waste into your next favorite shirt, mascara, or sneaker.

Meet BioBlack AR™ – Our 98.9% biobased asphalt rejuvenator. Cleaner materials for the roads we drive, the cities we build, and the places we call home.

A deep black, penetrating coating designed for parking lots, retail centers, and roadways. Non-hazardous, sustainably sourced, carbon neutral, and a drop-in replacement for petroleum-based coal tar and hazardous sealers.

Coal tar had its run. There’s a cleaner future for asphalt.

Our founder & CEO Jane Palmer has been named to Inc. Magazine Female Founders 500!  🎉

Jane founded Nature Coatings with a simple but radical idea: we shouldn’t have to choose between performance, price, and sustainability when choosing materials.

What started as a question about how better materials could exist has grown into a mission to rethink one of the most widely used pigments in manufacturing.

This recognition celebrates founders who are building what the next generation of industry looks like, and we’re proud to be doing that work with Jane every day.

Congratulations to Jane and all the devoted leaders recognized this year.

This National Biobased Day, on March 8, we celebrated our redefinition of what black can be. 🌱

We’re proud that our pigments are 100% USDA BioPreferred Certified biobased; independently verified and entirely derived from renewable resources (plus, we’re the first ever to hold this certification for cosmetics!)

Learn what this certification means for our mission to decarbonize color across various industries in the latest insight on our website.

Scale and profitability happens when sustainable products win on business fundamentals. That’s why we compete where it matters: price and performance.

That’s why we built our customer-first business model differently from day one.

Integrating a new pigment into a collection requires a rigorous business case that goes beyond sustainability (although it must deliver on that, too).

Most technical evaluations boil down to one core question: “Can BioBlack really replace carbon black in our existing mill workflows?”

The answer is a definitive yes. Here are a few reasons why:

* BioBlack meets the strictest EU regulations
* BioBlack performs as well or better than carbon black
* Every pigment solution is custom-tailored to your workflow

All that’s left is to order a sample of BioBlack and see the results on your own fabrics. 🖤

This isn’t wood waste. It’s your winged liner. Your brushing routine. Your wash day.

Conventional carbon black, commonly used in beauty and personal care like charcoal masks, eyeliners, eyeshadows, and soaps, can contain trace amounts of heavy metals, PFAS, and toxins that have no place near the most sensitive parts of your body. Not to mention its fossil-fuel derived, energy intensive footprint on our planet.

Globally compliant, competitively priced, 100% biobased and nontoxic, with even more to offer than we can fit here.

The proof is in the pigment.

At Nature Coatings, we believe the future of food packaging color will be defined not by what can be hidden in formulations, but by what can be clearly proven.

BioBlack is carbon-negative, free from harmful PAHs, and safe for direct food contact, all while meeting the strictest global packaging standards.

But can BioBlack really replace carbon black at scale? We made sure it can by making it drop-in compatible, seamless to integrate, and cost-competitive.

We’re at The Waterborne Symposium!

Hosted by the The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Polymer Science and Engineering, the event connects innovators advancing sustainability in the science and technology of surface coatings.

Alongside chemists, suppliers, students, and more, we’ll be learning how we can collaborate to push the boundaries of coating performance.

We’ll be in New Orleans from February 8–13, 2026. We hope to see you there!

For over a century, carbon black has been the go-to black pigment across industries. But its origin—derived from the incomplete combustion of petroleum—makes it inherently problematic. A toxic profile coupled with nanoscale particles small enough to pe*****te the skin, lungs, and even pass into the bloodstream, is a threat that has been ignored for far too long.

And while the average consumer may not be aware of these risks, those of us in manufacturing and R&D know better.

We know the implications of chronic exposure to carbon black. So the question isn’t whether we should shift to an alternative. The question is: Why haven’t we already?

Now is the moment to shift our dependency on toxic legacies. Whether it’s the worker screen printing t-shirts with black prints, the chemist developing packaging for organic granola, or the parent applying eyeliner before work, BioBlack offers a better path forward.

In an industry where most traditional leather production is chemically treated, the environmental toll is undeniable, with tanning and pre-tanning stages responsible for ~90% of the leather sector’s total pollution.

Heavy metals, toxic chemical finishes, and fossil-derived pigments are quietly undoing the sustainability gains of an otherwise natural hide.

As brands and manufacturers pursue bio-based alternatives to meet regulatory, worker-safety, and sustainability goals, material choices in the finishing and coating stages become just as critical.

Traceable black pigments like BioBlack support cleaner finishing systems engineered for the next generation of leather.
