Was it just me, or did the Met Gala feel more hollow this year? Maybe I’m just burnt out on the noise, but all the coverage felt disconnected and more so tainted by all that is going on around the world.
Observing this past week’s events around collective action—customers trying to buy into Spirit Airlines, calls to boycott Bezos’ whole gala orbit—and whether you agree with any of it or not, it signals a shift. More & more people are questioning power, money, and who gets to participate in what. Against that backdrop, an event like the Met Gala starts to feel a bit… vapid. Like it’s floating in its own bubble.
And I hate even saying that, because I genuinely love the creativity and artistry behind the event—we need more of that, not less. But this year it felt less like a celebration of expression and more like a sad spectacle of people not affected by what most are. I couldn’t shake the feeling that giving it my attention made me 🤡. Curious if anyone else felt it too.
