Philosophers see shadow and light; mathematicians, zeros and ones; scientists, matter and antimatter – often referring to the universe as fabric that could be folded or stretched, and might be real or just a hologram. The concept of the universe as a three-dimensional projection of a two-dimensional reality resonates profoundly with multimedia artists Pilar Zeta and Aedan Macdonald. The pair was already transferring images of their artwork onto clothing in 2013 when they decided to formally apply this philosophy to their fashion work, while keeping their mutual love of music and art in the mix. The result is Holographic Universe, headquartered in Los Angeles. Inspired by the cosmos, neo-classical sculpture, and time travel, Zeta and Macdonald’s first collection is titled Ganymede, after Saturn’s moon. The largest in the solar system, it’s also the only moon with a magnetosphere, and a legendary saltwater ocean under its rocky, icy surface – giving it a mysterious allure. The label’s debut collection – showing in Paris, New York, and Las Vegas this spring – features dresses that wink at Patrick Nagel’s airbrushed retro-futurist chic and jackets in dark, deep hues with abstract prints, all in textiles evoking Ganymede’s textures and aura. Photographed by electronic producer Jimmy Edgar, Holographic Universe’s collection embodies not only the group’s collaborative ideals, but their mixed-media approach and spiritual consciousness as well.
