What’s that piece of wood on your ironing board?
This tool is called a tailor’s clapper. The name comes from the ‘clap’ sound made when, during pressing, the sewist slaps the clapper down onto the fabric, forcing the steam through all layers. The unfinished wood absorbs some of the heat, so there are no shine marks from an iron that’s too hot. You can also rest the clapper on the fabric as it cools to press in a crisp edge.
Here I’m using it on a polyester/cotton blend to get a clean skirt hem.

I love a hand-stitched hem for linen! Here, I’m adding 1 inch to the length of these trousers by letting the hem out.

Communication is the best way to build trust with your sewist for investment pieces.

- Ask for pictures that support the years experience they claim.
- Ask to see and touch samples of their work.
- Don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions after your fitting.
- Don’t take it personally when we tell you no.

This last one is important. I actually told this client that I would not permanently shorten the straps on this dress. Doing so would eliminate the option of any future strap length changes to accommodate fluctuation in body size. The bust and torso fit of the dress had already changed between the time of purchase and the time of her fitting.
