These are the best fitting pair of jeans I’ve ever had in my life!

Jeans had always been one of the last areas of garment sewing for me to tackle. When the book “Fit and Sew Custom Jeans” by Helen Bartley came out in 2021, I’m pretty sure I was one of the first twenty people to buy it. And I devoured it! I reread it over and over again. It’s covered by notes in the margin and coffee cup stains. The way she worked out how to tissue fit with a stretch denim is genius!

Helen is a master when it comes to jeans. The book had everything in it I needed to be successful sewing jeans, but I still really wanted to take a workshop with her. It was amazing. So amazing that when I got home, I started strategizing how I could get her to come to Louisville and do a Jeans workshop in my studio. And now she is! She’ll be here for the in April 2025.

If jeans have been on your sewing wishlist, this is your sign that the time is now!!!!

The perfect jeans need the perfect fabric. and I searched high and low to find the best stretch denim. This Concord Denim from Robert Kaufman is 99% Cotton and 1% Spandex. It gives just the right amount stretch for a modern fit jean.

👖👖👖Jeans for my fall wardrobe plans! 👖👖👖

I’m a jeans girl; I always have been. However, RTW jeans do not love me. 😞 I am usually stuck buying the least disappointing pair, regardless of the style I had in mind when I walked into the store.

Learning to fit and sew jeans for my body has opened up so many possibilities. Finally, I can choose what my jeans look like instead of settling for good enough!

For these jeans, I wanted mid or high-waisted straight-leg jeans in a dark wash. is the perfect pattern for that look!

A fall look! 🍁🍁🍁

This project is the perfect combination of pretty fabric and an easy pattern.

I love that I can wear it buttoned as a cape and unbuttoned as more of a jacket. The underarm buttons make it more manageable than other capes I've worn.

I’m short on sewing time right now, so easy projects are really satisfying. This is the Woodland Stroll Cape by Liesl + Co. it is a really great beginner pattern. Especially if you are new to garment sewing. There is virtually no fitting needed and you get to practice buttonholes! This pattern came out ten years ago, but it is still a closet staple.

I didn't take a angle process picture bc this project is so quick, I cut it out and sewed it on a weekend afternoon!

Pattern: Liesl + Co Woodland Stroll Cape
Fabric: Yarn-dyed cotton flannel from my stash and black Kona cotton for the lining.
Size: XL

Happy Kentucky Derby 🌹🌹🌹🏇🏇🏇

The weather is beautiful this weekend. It should make for a fantastic day at Churchill Downs.

Here is my Derby-inspired Fringe Dress! I had fit the pattern on View A, so all I needed to do for View B was transfer my adjustments to the front bodice piece.

I must admit I was nervous about that neckline and rayon fabric. I was very gentle with my fabric until all the staystitching and interfacing was complete. It turned out beautifully! 🥰

Pattern: Chalk and Notch Fringe Dress
Fabric: Art Gallery Fabrics Rayon in Tinted Blooms Dusk

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

I love everything about the Kentucky Derby season! The Festival! Thunder Over Louisville! The Bed Races! The dresses on parade at Oaks and Derby! The extreme excitement in two-minute intervals! All of it!

In 2009, my friend Tracie asked me if I would sew a Derby Dress for her. I laughed and said that I was still learning how to sew clothes for myself, so that would be a big "No!". Now I'm ready to take the leap. I won't sew a dress for you, but I'll teach you how to sew your own dress!

What kind of dress is a Kentucky Derby dress? Honestly, whatever you want it to be. I'm always drawn to floral prints for Derby because I am dying for spring this time of year. So my dress has flowers! I also like to be comfortable and like sleeves on my dress. After sewing the Fringe Dress in a class earlier this year, it occurred to me that the B version of the Fringe Dress would make a perfect Derby Dress!

We'll finish the dress in one weekend, sewing all day Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. If you want help sewing your own dress, register at madestitch.co/workshops or link in bio!

I am loving this new Fringe Dress!

One of the most fun parts about teaching garment sewing is getting to sew samples for class! 😁

I’ve had this dress on my list for a long time. Now that I’ve sewn it, I think it’s a great pattern for a dress sewing class. It was easy to fit and easy to sew. You’ll love making this dress no matter what level of experience you have.

I’ll be teaching this class again April 22nd and 23rd. You’ll finish your dress in a weekend! Just in time for the Kentucky Derby!!!

Give me a double tap if you love chambray! 💙

I’ve had this fabric in my stash forever. I bought from the now closed . It is a chambray twill that is wonderfully soft and has stunning drape. I’m not sure on the content but it feels like cotton and bamboo.

I’ve almost used it several times for a button down shirt, but the the drape is so amazing I knew it was meant for a dress.

The Fringe Dress has been on my list pretty much since it was released in 2017. 🥰

I've seen so many fantastic versions of this pattern. Every year it ends up on multiple top 10 sewing pattern lists, clearly loved by stitchers.

When one of my students asked for a class on this pattern, I wanted to make that happen as soon as possible.

It was hard to narrow down what look I wanted to make for the sample, but I decided to start with a chambray button-down version.

We are about halfway through this semester and the class is going great. I will offer the class again in April for a Kentucky Derby Dress Class! 🏇

It’s so much fun to create things with friends! 🥰

Our parent/child classes are pretty special.

The idea to offer parent/child classes didn’t come from me. One of my friends said she wanted to do a class with her daughter, so I scheduled a one-off class to try it out. I had no idea I would like to teach these classes as much as I do or that so many people would be interested! Thanks for the idea!

I love this new SYAS hoodie!

This is the sample garment I made for the Teen Hoodie class.

Pattern: McCalls 8070
Fabric: See You At Six Chery Blossom North Atlantic Blue in 100% cotton french terry and North Atlantic Blue 2X1 solid ribbing
Size: Large
Adjustments: None

This is a great, basic sweatshirt pattern. The pattern had more ease than I expected. I know oversized sweatshirts are trendy now, but I usually like mine a little more fitted. This is a size Large and correct based on my body measurements, but I think next time, I'll size down to a medium.

The pattern itself was very easy to sew. I chose the inseam pockets instead of the kangaroo pocket so I wouldn't interrupt this awesome print. The only change I would recommend is to set the sleeves flat instead of in-the-round as indicated in the instructions.
