Grab a book off your first grader's shelf; see how big the type is?

There's more going on there than small hands. A young child can pick out a letter sitting by itself well before they can pick out the same letter when other letters are pressed close on either side. The neighbors get in the way. It's called crowding, and children feel it much more than adults do.

Sharpness is mostly finished developing by age six. Crowding is still improving at eight. In the research, crowding lines up with reading ability better than sharpness does.

Reading tests usually shrink the print as the child works down the page. One study kept the type at full size the whole way, and the same children scored about four months higher.

If reading got harder for your child this year, it's worth mentioning when you come in.

Ragweed runs from the middle of August until the first hard frost, and around here that frost usually holds off until the middle of October.

That is a long stretch to be uncomfortable in. Plenty of people reach for an oral antihistamine. The American Academy of Ophthalmology puts it plainly: the pills can help with itch, and they can also make eyes dry and worsen eye allergy symptoms.

Drops made for eye allergy are a different tool. The ones that pair an antihistamine with a mast cell stabilizer are built to prevent the reaction rather than chase it.

School has been going for almost three weeks. If you meant to get everybody in for exams before it started and then August happened, you are in good company.

That window closing does not mean much. A kid who needs glasses in September needs them exactly as much as a kid who needed them in August, and finding out in week three is not meaningfully worse than finding out in week one.

There is no penalty for being late to this. There is just the appointment you have not made yet.

Your Health Is Our Priority - and that includes helping you understand the difference between Comprehensive (routine) and MEDICAL eye exams! 👁️

Many patients are surprised to learn there are two distinct types of eye examinations, each covered by different insurance plans:

✅ ROUTINE EYE EXAMS:

- Covered by your VISION benefits
- Focus on evaluating your vision and updating prescriptions
- Include testing for glasses/contacts and basic eye health screening
- May contribute toward contact lens exams and materials
- Generally performed annually when your eyes are healthy

✅ MEDICAL EYE EXAMS:

- Covered by your MEDICAL insurance
- Required when our doctors detect signs of disease or conditions
- Include specialized testing and diagnosis of eye conditions
- Cover treatment for allergies, infections, and diseases like glaucoma
- Include emergency visits and foreign body removal
- Necessary for monitoring diabetic eye changes and other health conditions

This is why we ask for BOTH your vision and medical insurance information at your appointments. If our doctors detect signs of disease during your routine exam, they may need to perform additional testing - this is when your exam converts to a medical visit.

Twenty twenty is not a grade. It is a measurement, and a narrow one.

It means that standing twenty feet from a chart, you saw what a typical person sees from twenty feet. That is the entire claim. It describes sharpness at distance and nothing else.

It says nothing about how comfortably you focus up close, or whether your two eyes are working as a team, or what your eye pressure is doing, or how the retina and optic nerve look when someone actually examines them.

Plenty of people skip exams for years because a number once told them everything was fine. The number was true. It just was not answering the question they thought it was.

Look at a blank wall or a bright sky and you will probably see them. Little specks, threads, the occasional thing shaped like a translucent worm that drifts off whenever you try to look straight at it.

Those are floaters. The inside of your eye is filled with a clear gel, and over time small clumps form in it. What you are seeing is not the clump. It is the shadow the clump throws on the back of your eye.

Most of the time this is ordinary, and most people collect more of them with age.

What is not ordinary is a sudden burst of new ones, especially with flashes of light or a dark curtain creeping in from the side. That combination can mean a tear in the retina, and it is worth a phone call the same day, not next week.
