Start with the basics.
When it comes to fashion tips for men, it’s smart to start with the essentials. Focusing on building blocks for a great wardrobe that fit within a guy’s lifestyle.
So, if you work in a more casual office and find your need to still wear a nice collared shirt, focus on finding the best possible version of that shirt in terms of fit and fabric.
From there, focus on one great pair of jeans that you love, for instance. And so on. Before you know it, you’ll have a wardrobe stocked with basic pieces that really aren’t so basic.

Realize that dressing well is a skill
Just like cooking or shooting free throws, dressing well is a skill that can actually be learned.
My job as a personal stylist isn’t to buy clothes for guys and send them on their way. I teach men how to choose clothes that enhance them so they can do it on their own. If dressing well wasn’t a skill that could be taught, I’d be out of a job!
With all skills, you get better the more you practice. And unless you live in some weirdo nudist colony (I would apologize here, but if you're a nudist reading this blog, you're in the wrong place), you need to get dressed everyday. That means you have an opportunity to practice and nurture the skill of dressing well every single day.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY: Nobody is born in a perfectly tailored 3-piece suit, or with some magical intuition on how to dress well. (If you need a reminder, scroll back up and look at my high school picture again.) Realize that dressing well is a skill that can be developed through practice.

The 5-Second Rule Before You Put Vegetables in Your Cart 🛒

Most shopping mistakes happen in a hurry. You see a vegetable that looks good, you grab it, and move on. But taking just five seconds can save you money and waste.

Before putting any vegetable in your cart, quickly check three things: weight, firmness, and skin condition.

If it feels lighter than it looks, it may already be losing moisture. If it feels soft in spots, it won’t last long at home. And if the skin has tiny cuts or bruises, it will spoil faster — even if the rest looks fine.

This is especially important for tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, and capsicum. They can look perfect under store lights but break down quickly in your fridge.

The best vegetables usually feel slightly heavier, firm, and smooth without damp surfaces.

Five extra seconds in the store can save you two days of frustration at home.

Imitate, imitate, imitate
How do students in art school learn their craft? Correct: By studying and copying the styles of other artists.
I know, I know, I’m usually all about ‘developing your own unique style’ and ignoring other people’s rules. But: For a complete beginner, imitating others can be a super helpful creative technique, because it gives you a concrete blueprint that you can use as a starting point. Most fashion newbies that email me mention feeling overwhelmed and just plain confused. They know they need to experiment, but don’t know where to start.
My advice is always the same: Imitate! Pick one outfit and copy it. Then assess what you like/don’t like about it, rinse and repeat.
Find an outfit on Pinterest or on a fashion blog that you could imagine wearing for one of your regular day-to-day activities, for example to work or on the weekends. Then, use your own clothes to replicate that outfit as closely as possible, or go into a store and try stuff on.
Imitating helps you on two levels:
By trying to copy an outfit as perfectly as possible, you are forced to really pay attention to details, like the fit of the pieces and how they work together to create the overall silhouette of the outfit. When it comes to fashion, details like that matter. For example, the two outfits above both consist of a white t-shirt, jeans and a brown belt. But the cut and fit of those pieces, and therefore also the silhouette and overall vibe of the outfit, is completely different.
On top of that imitating is also simply a great way to experiment and hone in on your individual likes. In the best case scenario you love your copied look and have discovered a new favourite that you’ll want to wear all the time (go ahead, outfits aren’t copyrighted). And if you don’t like the outfit on yourself, you can use that as an opportunity to learn more about your style too, by trying to figure out exactly what it is you don’t like about it. The fit of the pieces, the colours, the materials? Can you think of a way to tweak it to make it better? Are there any aspects you do like about the look? How could you incorporate into your wardrobe?

Become an expert observer
The number one thing you can do to improve your sense of style and train your eye is this: look at how other people are doing it! What types of pieces are they wearing, what colours do they mix, what shoes do they pair with their outfits, how do they accessorise and so on.
Pretend you are a researcher in a foreign culture and are trying to find out as much as possible about the local customs.
Use your everyday environment as your lab: Sit in a cafe and just watch people passing by, pay close attention to your co-workers' and friends’ outfits and check out what your fellow commuters are wearing on your train ride to work (in a non-creepy way of course :)). Use Pinterest and fashion blogs to supplement your real-life studies and expose yourself to a broader range of styles.
The key throughout this whole process is to be as precise as possible. If you see an outfit that you like, figure out what exactly makes it so great. Is it the overall vibe of the look (e.g. preppy, bohemian or minimalist), the colour scheme or a specific piece? Let’s say the two pics above caught your attention. Was it because of the neutral colours? The simple lines? Do you just like big sun glasses and black tote bags?
That is how you train your eye, by observing and paying close attention to how other people wear clothes and what types of things resonate with you and which don’t. It’s super basic, but if you ask them about it, people who have a great style and are ‘into fashion’ will probably tell you that they do this already, and have been doing so for years. Over time, you will get more and more of a feel for what kinds of clothes you like and how you like them to fit, and can then use that information to upgrade your wardrobe, either by wearing your existing clothes in a new way or by adding some new pieces.

You Do You
Above all else, fashion should be fun. It should make you feel good. So if there’s something that doesn’t work for you, feel free to toss it out the window. That hot new TikTok aesthetic, a wave of retro sneaker trends, Pantone’s Color of the Year—if these “must have” items don’t feel true to who you are, then you don’t need to wear them. In truth there’s no such thing as a hard and fast fashion “rule.” Just because Beyoncé’s stylist says you should own a blazer or a seasoned fashion editor says petites should never wear tent dresses, doesn’t mean you’re wrong for not missing a blazer or for adoring billowy, shapeless frocks. Tips, tricks, hacks and even supposed rules can all be incredibly helpful, but they are not the end all be all of style. Bottom line: You do you, dear reader, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

There’s a 95 Percent Chance You Need a New Bra
A few years ago, I posted a poll in the PureWow editorial team Slack channel asking “how often do you replace you bras?” The overwhelming response was “when they literally fall apart/have visible holes.” It should go without saying, but you should retire your bra before the underwire starts stabbing you. In fact, our expert resources recommend replacing your everyday bras every six to eight months, which I’ll admit, is far more often than I’d like. But a good bra is the literal foundation of all your outfits and has a huge impact on the way clothing falls on your body. Gifting yourself with the proper building blocks is a guaranteed way to ease the stress of all other sartorial puzzles that may come your way.

Remember the 2:1 Waist/Neck Rule
Shopping secondhand can unearth some truly incredible, unique pieces to add to your wardrobe. But the truth is that it often takes a lot more effort than shopping the new arrivals at your favorite department store. Which is why I absolutely flipped when Assistant Editor Delia Curtis taught me this wild hack for buying pants without needing to try them on. “The trick says that typically the circumference of your neck doubled will likely be the circumference of your waist. With that in mind, the rule states that if you hold the waist of a pair of pants up to your neck and the ends meet together with little to no room between the edges of the waist, the pants should fit.” It may sound too bonkers to be true, but according to the experts (and my own personal field testing), it really does work.

Sometimes You Just Can’t Fake It
Social media is chock-full of fashion and style hacks that claim to transform your favorite bikini bottoms in a chic crop top, allow you to wear a regular T-shirt bra as a backless one or using a hair tie to hem your pants. And while some of these tricks are wonderfully clever, others simply do not work for the vast majority of people. Sometimes the best solution to finding a bra to wear with a backless dress is just to invest in an actual backless bra.

Try the Three-Color Rule
Three really does seem to be the magic fashion number, doesn’t it? Yet another tip that demonstrates the power of trios, the Three-Color Rule came to me via stylist Ellie Richards, who specializes in fashion psychology, and whose TikTok post expertly breaks down everything you need to know. Basically, when building an outfit, you should stick to only three colors: pick one dominant color to set the overall tone of your look, a secondary color to complement the primary and then a third, accent color to add contrast and a visual “pop.

Mix Your Weekend and Work Wear like a Pro Katie Holmes
The idea of distinct wardrobe sections for different aspects of your life—work, weekend, date night—has been slowly but surely dissipating. And while I still don’t recommend wearing your denim cutoffs or cutout tank top to the office, you can (and should) find ways to style your workwear for off-duty hours. After all, if you’re going to spend your hard-earned money on the best wide-leg trousers, you should also get maximum use out of them. And no one provides better inspo for mixing business with pleasure than Katie Holmes.
