Wrapping up some updates to my Street Name Origins map! This has quickly become one of my favorite spreads for the book.

When I first shared this for the , the suggestions poured in for other thematic street name clusters I’d missed. Since then, I’ve been busy expanding the data:

🌲 National Parks & Sites on the West Side (Yellowstone Dr, Acadia Dr, Everglade Dr to name a few)

🚀 Space theme on the Far East Side (Anyone live on Milky Way or Orion Trail?)

🍏 The Beatles—a small but legendary pocket of songs-turned-streets! 🎸

Not a cartographically complex map for the book, but certainly one to spark some debates! I’ve been still slowly collecting community data on how the public collectively defines the “sides” of Madison. For the book I’ve opted to use the designations set in the Generalized Future Land Use plan. How do these differ from your perspective on the core areas of Madison?

| Day 30 Makeover | Madison in 50 Maps!

After four years of making maps of our incredible city, I’m very excited to share that I’m writing a book! As part of the “50 Maps” series, I’ll be the author of the forthcoming Madison edition. Books are already available from other cartographers for Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and the Great Lakes — Chicago and Boston also coming soon!

Many of the maps I featured in this year’s series are drafts for the book, which I’ll be refining over the coming months. To new folks following and longtime fans, I appreciate your engagement this month and I hope you enjoyed my fourth round of the 30DMC. It will be a little while until it hits bookstore shelves near you, but I’m excited to share more sneak peeks until the it arrives.

| Day 29 Raster | Algal Bloom

Admittedly raster isn’t my particular area of cartographic expertise… but here’s a stylization of Sentinel 2 imagery capturing a particularly gnarly algal bloom in May 2023. This particular event led to beach closures quite early in the summer season.

One more day to go in this year’s challenge!

| Day 28 Black | Road America 🏁

The Road America racetrack stylized like the ubiquitous black and white license plates you see around Wisconsin.

Part of last year’s series, I got many requests to make this one a print and it pushed me to figure out how to do full bleed printing with a solid black background flooding the page. It takes a LOT of ink, but the result is an almost silky matte finish that is even cooler to see in person. It’s been quite the popular print all summer and so far into gift season!

| Day 27 Boundaries | Not Madison

Wisconsin’s land was first divided in the early–mid 1800s using the U.S. Public Land Survey System, carving the territory into six-mile square townships.

As Madison grew, many nearby areas chose to incorporate to avoid annexation and keep control over local decisions. A few examples: Shorewood Hills incorporated in 1927 to maintain its village character; Monona became a city in 1969 after decades of resisting annexation; and Fitchburg incorporated in 1983 specifically to prevent being absorbed by Madison.
