Santa Fe in the 1850’s (?)

This remarkable oil painting is courtesy of Nedra Matteucci Galleries. The artist is unknown, the back simply declaring it came from the American School.

This painting depicts La Parroquia, which was the church that stood before the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis was built.

In fact, today’s Cathedral was actually built around the exterior of this old church. When the new building was completed, the old one was dismantled, adobe by adobe, and carried out the front door. Many of the old vigas were carried off by the townspeople and used in homes around town. Many are undoubtedly still in use to this day.
