Many times I’ve tried to pin point exactly why I started Time Travelers Circle. I’ve never been into fashion & have always dressed to blend in instead of stand out.
The more I go back & try to remember how this journey started, the more the image of these 1980s vintage “mc hammer pants” flash in my head.
It may sound silly but these pants are the reason it all began.
In one year I have made multiple trips to my mailbox, sending out over 200 packages to almost all 50 states and beyond. I currently sell vintage clothing on three different platforms as well as in-store and these pants are to thank for that.
I can remember the day I went to goodwill, seeing these baggy pink pants hanging at the end of a rack. I picked them up and they felt different, like no other piece of clothing I owned. I couldn’t put my finger on what was so different about these pants but I took them home to find out.
That night, not only did I learn that these $2 pants I picked up from Goodwill could be sold for 50 times more than what I paid, I also learned a more valuable lesson about about making conscious choices when it comes to what you’re wearing.
You see, the clothes made today are easily replaceable and made cheaply and unethically. They are made to throw out after they rip, instead of being hemmed or patched. They are not made in the USA, out of good quality materials, & by people making a living wage in good working conditions.
They are made by immigrants in sweatshop-like conditions, working for pennies a day making clothing that will likely be in a landfill by next year.
However, vintage is different. Vintage is made to last; Vintage is sustainable.
When I picked up those pants that day, I wasn’t just feeling the crisp, 100% cotton made in USA.
I was feeling the energy & memories that were made in the many years these pants roamed the earth before me. I was feeling the same excitement that someone else felt in the 80’s whenever they first spotted them at the store.
And that is why I do what I do at Time Travelers Circle. I keep the memories alive and your grandmas clothing in rotation for years to come.
History repeats itself, why can’t clothes?
