New door is in! Exciting movement on the façade project. We're on schedule to re-open for business this Friday May 1 at 10am.

We're hoping to have our windows, doors and platforms complete by May 15.

We can't wait to celebrate our Grand Re-Opening and 2nd Birthday the weekend of May 22nd, so follow for updates!

The peonies in my garden have sent up their shoots and typically bloom by June. I think right now River St. is a lot like those peonies. All the effort putting up shoots and roots means we'll bloom all Summer.

April, like T.S. Eliot says, really is the cruelest month: no snow for skiing, and no sunshine for the beach.

Just a lot of growth, patience, and good things to come.

Façade Project Update:

April 12-18: One week to take old windows, framing, and cosmetic brick down, to tear out rotted wood and insulation.
April 19 - 25: One week to repair supports, install and paint foyer ceiling, and reinforce structural components.
April 26 - 30: 🤞🤞 One week to put up window frame and install glass door and center-- so we can welcome back our customers and community!

Repairing an old building is definitely an adventure. Good practice for embracing uncertainty with patience and persistence.

It helps to look back on what we've already done! In 2024 we installed our fitting rooms, painted the space white and refinished the floors. (See attached pictures).

In April 2024 we began to get our first deliveries of inventory.

In Fall of 2025 we were awarded a facade grant for needed repairs on our windows, doors, and framing.

After a long, long winter-- we were able to begin work on this project.

The first picture shows our window platform with all the glass and framing removed. Being able to see all the way to the basement from under the platform is a view that doesn't happen often. Most of the Victorian buildings on River St. would've originally had glass surrounding the window platforms as to let light into the basement.

Without electricity, natural light was a priority. I've heard a lot about a tunnel system that used to run under the streets for coal deliveries-- there was a lot of coal dust in the framing we removed. This says a lot about how old it was.

My hope is all these repairs will preserve a part of River Street with respect to its dynamic history. The stories these buildings would tell if they could speak...

Façade Project Update:

Weather and old construction have caused some delays. Our new projected open for business date is April 22. However, you can shop our website https://the-piping-plover.com/ anytime! As a local community storefront, we're grateful for your business during this transition.

Given all the support on our prior posts, I wanted to share more information about this project. One of the neat things about having a building in a historic district is that decisions about construction earn a "certificate of appropriateness" from the historic commission. Applying for this certification helped me research and gather information about 385 River St.

In the pictures attached you'll see a photo of 385 River St. as a men's clothing store called "Billie's." There's also a photo of The Piping Plover from last Spring, (note the tin hood and faux brick façade which were added later). Last, I've included an architect's rendering of our finished façade. [We'll be celebrating the completed project on our 2nd yr anniversary May 22!]

Even though this is a pretty small project, it still involves many community members. Civic volunteers, city-employees, neighbors, contractors, public-historians, architects, engineers, and customers are ALL vital to the project's success. Thanks also to our Downtown Manistee DDA for their grant-matching program that makes this restoration possible.

Manistee, the place to be!

Façade update: our brick and mortar location will be closed Thursday April 16th. If *cough cough, everything goes according to plan, our new glass panes for our door and middle panels will be installed today— meaning we’ll be open for business for the weekend.

This is the first time I’ve taken on a restoration of this scale and it’s exciting, nerve-wracking and anxiety inducing. I’m trying to keep the end goal in mind, which is an energy efficient, restored storefront celebrating the unique Victorian architecture of Manistee’s downtown: which I think is a special place to live, work, visit, and be.

Wish us luck! Thank you for your patience! We can’t wait to celebrate the end product with you 💕
