I’m dyeing to share a work in progress. Pun intended! I was at a loss as to the correct trim to use on the hem of this hat. A contrast just appeared too jarring, so I decided to dye white trim to match. The Rit Dye color formula gave me a place to start. The first batch was a bit too orange against the sinamay. Second batch, I adjusted the color with more red. I took one length out quickly for a light shade, while the second resulted in a more intense shade. I’m happy with the result of the quick dye light shade match. Dyeing is an art and a science!

I had the pleasure of speaking to the Marco Island New Comers Club this week. My topic was Hats in Fashion where we explored Pantone trends, hat style trends as seen at the races and “custom designing to a dress” examples. What fun!

Getting the perfect fit is what it’s all about for all day comfort at the races.

Men aren’t used to wearing hats on a daily basis anymore (although they should be), so fit and comfort are paramount. My customer had a 24” head size, so a factory stiffened Panama straw in an XL size still had to be tweaked for the perfect fit. Drawing it in a smidge with a petersham headband for comfort resulting in the first hat that ever fit him. He’ll be dapper at the races!

Let’s look at a different way to wire & edge a brim! I like this method especially when I use two different colors of sinamay; but I chose to do it here for a neat crisp edge. Details in the photos.

Attempting to share more process photos. Sewing this lovely vintage braid together into a bias strip creates the perfect edging to trim this brim. The white braid will coordinate with the future white crown for a very “spring” feel.

Making a headband with the right angles can assure a snug and comfortable fit, as well as keep a headpiece from wobbling. Starting with 18 gauge millinery wire, wrapping with petersham ribbon and voila’!

Sometimes less is more. This customer’s dress really makes a statement, a beautiful one, but a complex color story. She wanted a small headpiece, so I pulled an extremely flattering color from the dress, raspberry pink, and selected sinamay as it could become structural yet remain light and airy.

Very excited to use this new block (wooden millinery mold/form) and see the creation come to life. Block by Boon & Lang of England was covered in delicious raspberry sinamay and worked with steam & strength to become the
most ‘Dior-esque’ hat shape. This silhouette called for very little adornment as not to distract from its shape. Flattering, ladylike and just plain old beautiful! She’ll be known as ‘Paris’.
