Has your child ever surprised you with a word in another language?

Sanctuary Spanish is native speaker immersion, so children speak from the very first class. Games, songs and real conversation instead of worksheets and vocabulary lists. They are not studying Spanish. They are using it.

It meets twice a week, which is what makes it stick. A child who hears a language on Tuesday and again on Thursday is not starting over every time.

Sanctuary Spanish meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center. Ages 5 and up, no experience needed. The class is capped at 20 so every child gets to talk. ESA accepted through ClassWallet.

What did your kids build this week?

Ours spend Tuesday mornings on LEGO Science. Every class opens with a real science question, like how animals protect themselves, and the children build a working model to answer it. Bricks, motors and sensors, in teams of four, and then they test it and explain what they found.

It is the LEGO Education Science curriculum on the 5E lesson model, running a 40 week path through life science, physical science, earth and space, and engineering design. All materials are provided, so there is nothing to buy or bring.

If your child is not a good fit for Sanctuary STEM, your payment becomes full credit toward any other Home Is Our Sanctuary program. Your family finds the right fit either way.

Sanctuary STEM meets Tuesdays at 11:00 AM at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center. Ages 6 to 12. ESA accepted through ClassWallet. 13 of the 24 seats are open.

A lot of kids will tell you they are not good at art before they have really tried.

Yesterday ours had a show. A quarter of work from Sanctuary Art went up on the wall at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, open to anyone who wanted to walk in and look. Color wheels, value scales, watercolor studies, and a row of yellow ducks.

We put out paint and stamps too, so the families who came could print something of their own and take it home.

That is what the class is built to do. Not a perfect picture. A child who made something, and can stand next to it and tell you about it.

Sanctuary Art meets Thursdays at 11:00 AM at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center. Ages 5 and up, all supplies included, ESA accepted through ClassWallet.

Tomorrow morning, there is something free to do in Maricopa.

Our art students spent this quarter learning how color mixes, how much water changes a paint, and what happens when every child adds one dot to the same mural.

That work goes up on the wall tomorrow, and the show is open to everyone, not just the families in the class.

HIOS Quarterly Art Show. Thursday, October 15, 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, Redwood A room. Free, and there is a fall art activity set up for the kids while you look.

It is also the easiest way to see what Sanctuary Art is actually like. The class meets Thursdays at 11:00 AM in that same building, ages 5 and up, supplies included.

RSVP in our Art Show event so we bring enough craft kits. Questions: call or text 602-492-4670.

What did your kids make this week?

Ours spent Thursday covering a mural in dots. Pom-poms, buttons, paper circles, every child adding their own, until the separate dots turned into one picture.

That mural goes up on the wall this Thursday, along with the rest of the quarter's work.

Your child can learn American Sign Language from someone who lives it every day.

Meet Isabella Luciano. She is Deaf, a fluent native ASL signer, and has spent 11 years tutoring and mentoring students. ASL is her first language, and she knows how to teach it to beginners.

Our new Sanctuary American Sign Language Program starts Wednesday, October 28, at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center.

Here's how it works:

• Ages 5 to 17, beginners welcome
• Wednesdays, 1:00 to 2:00 pm
• In person and face to face, never recorded
• Student ASL workbook included
• Capped at 20 students, with three adults in every class
• $129 every 28 days, ESA eligible through ClassWallet

We mix ages on purpose. Younger kids learn quickly alongside older ones, and older kids grow as leaders by helping others.

Families can join any week. Your 28-day cycle starts on your first class.

Comment ASL below and we'll send you the details.

Warmly,
Simone and Cortland Watson

One dot does not look like much.

This week Sanctuary Art met Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist who covers whole rooms in polka dots. For her the dots are about how one person is part of something bigger.

Then the kids made it real. Pom-poms, buttons, and paper circles, each student adding their own dots to one shared mural. Apart, a dot is small. Together they turned into a full picture, which is also a fair description of this class.

You can come see the work. HIOS Quarterly Art Show, Thursday October 15, 11:00 to 12:30, Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, Redwood A room. Free, open to everyone, with a fall art activity for the kids.

RSVP in our Art Show event. Questions: call or text 602-492-4670.

What is your child working on this fall?

Our art students spent this quarter on value and color mixing, and on how much a little more water changes a paint.

What did your kids figure out this week?

Thursday morning the art room was all grids. Twelve colors across the top, numbered 1 to 12, three rows going down. Same paint every time, just more water in each row, so the color got paler as they went.

It is a plain exercise and it teaches the thing most beginners miss. You do not need a lighter paint. You need more water.

Some of them filled the white space around the grid with hearts and flowers, which is also the point.

Sanctuary Art meets Thursdays at 11:00 AM at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, ages 5 and up, no experience needed, supplies included. ESA accepted through ClassWallet.

Their work goes up at the end of the quarter, and this time the show is open to everyone. Thursday, October 15, 11:00 to 12:30, same building, Redwood A room. It is free and there is a fall art activity for the kids. RSVP in our Art Show event.
