Hope is becoming reality.

At just 23 years old, Daniel Cressy of New Orleans has achieved a remarkable milestone after becoming the first person in Louisiana to receive a functional cure for sickle cell disease through gene therapy. To celebrate his recovery journey, he rang the ceremonial bell at Manning Family Children’s Hospital on June 22, 2026.

This breakthrough represents more than one person’s success story, it symbolizes hope for thousands of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease. It reminds us that continued research, innovation, and advocacy are changing lives and bringing us closer to a future where sickle cell no longer defines anyone’s destiny.

Dating a person with sickle cell disease is not about taking on a burden it’s about choosing to understand a journey.

Some days, we may look perfectly fine while fighting pain, fatigue, or health challenges that aren’t visible to the eye. We don’t need pity; we need patience, understanding, and genuine support.

If you’re dating someone with sickle cell:

❤️ Learn about the condition.
❤️ Understand that plans may sometimes change due to health needs.
❤️ Be supportive without being overprotective.
❤️ Communicate openly and honestly.
❤️ See the person, not just the diagnosis.

A person living with sickle cell can love deeply, build a successful career, raise a family, and live a meaningful life. The disease is part of who we are, but it is not all that we are.

The right partner doesn’t just love you on your best days—they stand beside you through life’s challenges as well.

Because real love sees beyond the diagnosis.

There is no single look, body type, or appearance that defines a sickle cell warrior.

Many of us wear our smiles while carrying burdens that others cannot see. We show up, fulfill our responsibilities, and keep moving forward even on the days when pain, fatigue, or uncertainty try to slow us down.

Over the years, I’ve often been told, “You look so healthy,” and I genuinely appreciate those kind words. But looking well is not the same as having an easy journey. It is a reflection of God’s grace, strength, and faithfulness through every challenge.

To every sickle cell warrior reading this:

Never allow someone else’s perception to define your reality. Your strength is not measured by your appearance but by the battles you have fought and the courage it takes to keep going.

You are resilient.
You are courageous.
You are worthy.
You are enough.

Keep living.
Keep believing.
Keep hoping.
Keep shining.

Sickle cell may be part of your story, but it does not define who you are. You are living proof of perseverance, purpose, and God’s sustaining grace.
