We seem to have run head-first into one of the most adorable little anomalies we've ever had on our farm.
We present to you: Prince Turkey the Smol.
Turkey was one of two naked-neck (AKA "Turken") chicks that we got from our local tractor supply about a month ago. Those two were part of a haul of ten chicks of various breeds that we got. However, it became apparent after a few weeks that one of the Turken chicks wasn't growing as much as their peers. Or even the other Turken.
Prince Turkey further went on to develop a nasty foot infection which, today, has completely healed, after about two weeks of daily treatment.
He continues to fledge on a regular timeline; his feet are fit and healthy; he's a voracious eater... He just hasn't gotten much bigger size-wise than a freshly-hatched chick in a month's time.
So we're going to bring you as much of this tiny guy's adventures as we can get!

Some gorgeous close-ups of our fall/winter feed blend that we use for our laying flock.
This blend is optimized to help laying flocks maintain body weight and caloric balance, even in the harsh winter months. Further, in mixed flocks of laying and meat birds, it helps bridge the gap in nutritional requirements. And we're happy to share our recipe with you!

We begin with: a 50 pound bag of layer pellets.
This should be a well-balanced feed pellet made with laying chickens in mind. Most commercial products labeled as pellets for laying hens are adequate for this use.

To this, we add:
- Ten pounds of scratch grains. This can be bought in bulk or pre-packaged at your local rural/tractor supply store. Our preferred blend uses cracked corn, sorghum, wheat berries, and black sunflower seed. The corn and wheat supply additional simple carbs for ready energy; the sorghum supplies a more complex carbohydrate profile with additional protein; the black sunflower supplies healthy fats.
- 5-8 pounds of nyjer seed. I can hear some folks already: "That's for songbirds, not chickens!" Well, the reality is, the bulk prices between nyjer and black sunflower seeds have become virtually equal in the current market. And nyjer seed is higher in protein with similar oil content and fatty acid profile to black sunflower. Plus, nyjer has the benefit of being small enough to add to chick feed. This gives our flock the nutritional edge to maintain healthy muscles and robust down feathers, both of which are key to winter health.

We keep this indoors, in a large plastic tote with a tight-fitting lid. Under these conditions, it should remain good for 30-45 days.

Livestock news: Fancy guppies!
Two weeks ago, I crossed a yellow King Cobra male with a very pretty Lavender Mosaic female. It'll take another 2 weeks for the fry to be born, and another 4 weeks for them to mature.
So in six weeks or so, we'll have some truly incredible specimens for sale!
Sales will be in-person where possible, but arrangements for shipping to neighboring states (Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa) can be made at the buyer's expense.

Farming has its highs and lows.
When you have plants, you have the ability to grow food and also the risk of the plant getting some kind of disease or an animal that eating the food you’re trying to grow.
When you have animals, you have the capability of that animal becoming food(example cows for the beef or chickens for their meat) as well as the animal producing food for instance hens laying eggs. You also have the possibility of your animal being attacked by a predator.
It’s with a broken heart, that we at Lamp Lighter Farm & Store lost 3 out of 4 of our Silkies(chickens).Their purpose was going to be egg-layers. They produce small eggs which would have been a perfect size for breakfast for our children.
We will fix the issue and continue raising what we have and possibly add more to our farm.

We’re officially open to taking custom decal orders. They can be made for tumblers, any kind of cup, shirts, coasters,bags. You name it. You have the choice for just the decal itself or I can provide the item. The price will depend on your choice for just the decal or decal and item. Before I cut or print your item I will keep constent communication to make sure that you love your design. I will also offer premade items.

For custom items, I do ask that you pay at the time of your order. I do offer shipping if needed.
