Another bag with a recessed zipper complete! It turned out so cute, and adding the zipper, sewing the final seams to the bottom of the bag, and attaching the handles definitely brought a fun challenge - sewing with vinyl. I am so proud of how well it turned out!
One of my favorite things about sewing classes is that students get to make something they truly love while learning new skills and building confidence along the way.

Teaching a young lady how to draft a collar for a dress she dreamed up herself has been such a fun project. She wanted the collar stiff and standing out, so we used Pellon stabilizer to help bring her vision to life.
I love seeing students get excited about sewing and realizing they really can create something from their own imagination. Beginning sewing and pattern drafting are not always perfectly exact—and that’s okay. Progress, not perfection, is always the goal.
One little trick I’ve found helpful is marking darts clearly since many students naturally want to cut into the fabric for notches instead of cutting outward from the edge. Those little details are all part of the learning process and help build confidence and skill over time.
This dress started with just two inspiration pictures from a book and a big imagination. I’m so excited to see how it turns out and proud of her for taking on such a creative challenge. Sewing teaches patience, problem-solving, creativity, and confidence right alongside the stitches.

Watching students learn to sew and create something completely their own is honestly one of my favorite parts of teaching. You don’t have to be perfect or experienced to make something fun, cozy, and full of personality — every project is part of the learning process.

This week’s Project of the Week is this adorable bucket hat!
I am excited about this one because it is beginner friendly and a great skill builder. One thing I actually love about this pattern is that it runs a little roomy. Beginner sewists often naturally sew with wider seam allowances, so the finished hat usually turns out just the right size for most people. That seam consistency is a skill that develops with time and practice.

One of my favorite beginner tips is placing a strip of blue painter’s tape on the sewing machine as a seam guide. Having that visual “line it up here” marker can make such a big difference in confidence and accuracy.

Summer is coming, and so many students have been asking for a hat pattern, so this felt like the perfect project to make together!

I finally got a couple OLD cross stitches of mine washed, pressed (though the wrinkles are still putting up a fight 😅), and hung up to enjoy again. I just love cross stitch—it reminds me so much of paint by number, but with thread.

Now I’m thinking I really need to teach a cross stitch class. The hardest part is figuring out the schedule… daytime, evenings, kids, teens, adults? So many ideas!

This crocheted flower bookmark/decor was meant to be a quick 15-minute project, but it turned into such a good balance of learning and creativity. It introduced the unfinished double crochet stitch while still reinforcing the basics students need to feel confident with.

Teaching is always that balance — some students are ready to keep stretching and learning new techniques, while others can feel overwhelmed if too much is introduced at once. Projects like this are a great middle ground: simple enough to finish and feel successful, but with just enough new skill to keep things interesting and help everyone grow at their own pace.

Simple zippered pencil pouch ✂️ This is our beginner project of the week for anyone who doesn’t already have a sewing plan in mind. It’s the perfect go-to project — simple, useful, and works up quickly while teaching great foundational sewing skills like zippers, straight seams, and lining. Plus everyone leaves with something they can actually use 😊

This bag, made by a 10year old, turned out so great! Between the quilting, recessed zipper, and boxed corners, there were a lot of techniques packed into one project. So many valuable sewing skills being learned along the way, and it’s always exciting to see everything come together into something both beautiful and functional.

Simple kitty crochet — such good practice for adding a face and whiskers. Those little details really make the kitty come to life. I’m always looking for small, hopefully-finished-in-an-hour projects that teach new skills while still giving students something cute and encouraging to take home.
