Many, primarily women, have taken up the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for empowerment and to learn skills to help defend themselves against the increasing danger women are facing globally.

The reality is that there are many coaches that take advantage of their rank to groom students. There are many incidents of sexual harassment that are a big deal for a second then people forget about it and act like nothing happened. Then it happens again.

I am new to BJJ, but I have been lucky to have coaches that respect boundaries and actually care about the sport. It sucks that I have to say I’m lucky to have this. It should be normal. I am proud to say that I have a coach that is just as passionate about spreading awareness.

Have you ever spoken with a guy and noticed how hard it is for them to express their emotions?

Culture and society has made many of them believe that it’s weird to talk about their feelings, weak to be vulnerable, or dumb to try to reach out for emotional support.

CAN WE MAKE AN EFFORT TO CHANGE THIS??

- Check in on your guy friends
- Work to make it a safe space for them to open up to you
- If you’re a guy, practice expressing how you feel in a healthy manner
- Start listening to the podcast

It’s “acceptable” for them to show anger, so many of them think that’s the best and only way they should express their feelings. It doesn’t have to stay this way.

I have heard some of the most disturbing stories. Boys saying “you know you like it” to a girl saying “please stop”.

Did it not just make you uncomfortable to even read that?? That’s the point. We must work to fight things from their root to have a chance at winning.

Most young men think that because they’re h***y all the time, girl must be too and want it just as bad.

TEACH YOUR KIDS TO RESPECT BOUNDARIES.

Educate them so that they don’t have the excuse of saying “no one ever taught me what consent was”.

Let yourself feel anger but never make it your home -

This is something I have personally dealt and continue to deal with: anger.

Although it might not have been the healthiest way to do things, I let it fuel me. It was my way of getting through things and it has given me the courage to stand up for others that have been through something similar. But allowing anger to consistently fuel me had its downfalls.

Don’t let the anger consume you. I know you may feel angry, overwhelmed, tired, but anger is not all that you are. You are strong, a survivor, and someone that needs to prove it to themselves that what happened to you is only a part of your story. It is not all that you are. It will not define you.

Ultimately there’s not a right or wrong answer. Plus we are not here to judge what you’re doing to survive.

I understand. Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to get through it. Other times you start acting in ways that you don’t even comprehend yourself.

I am sorry if people made you feel that there was a right or wrong way to cope. I am sorry if they made you feel crazy. I am so sorry if anyone made you feel as if you didn’t deserve to cope because “you should consider your role in the event” or “it could have been worse”.

Encouraging is not the same as applying pressure. Don’t try to pressure/force them to get help; simply encourage it.
