This one was for Alane! She would not have turned down this challenge.

Three weeks ago, a bride was in the dressing room at the cleaners when I walked in. She says, "Its okay if you can't do it. I've had five people tell me no already." Oh no...they were planning a wedding for October, but the fiancé is deploying for a year in May. They just found out and moved everything up to April 25th. So she had to go buy a dress.

I had to break it to her that it was too small in the back because there was no way I could make that gap close. And, there were holes in the mesh already. I told her I'd make something work, but wasn't sure what it would be. Her mom decided to drive an hour to delivery her boxed wedding dress to me in case I could use something from it.

Three days later we met again and talked about my idea and made a plan. She also wanted the long sleeves shortened to half sleeves. Instead of hemming the dress three or four inches in the front, she said she'd get some chunky shoes to raise her up.

Fast forward to tonight, the plan came together. I cut the appliques off some of the mesh and made it come to a point in the back. I used the appliques from the sleeves to make the edges and cover up a couple small holes. I cut a piece off of mom's dress and made straps to go across the back to help hold up her shoulders. Then covered it with more appliques left over from the sleeves. A simple bustle was also added.

She came tonight. I told her she was leaving with the dress even if we had to stay till midnight. She put it on. I pinned a couple places that needed adjusted. 45 minutes later, she had her last fitting. The back looked 10 times better than what we started with, the shoulders stayed up, and she was happy.

A few weeks ago I invited my neighbor to go to a Valentines party with me on the 14th because Cheyenne had plans. Then I had the dilemma of getting her a present. I didn't have to look hard for my solution. I had her sweater and her husband's shirt and tie from their wedding, with plans to make pillows to go with her tshirt quilt. So, I made the pillows ahead of the quilt and wrapped them in a box. There were lots of tears...she loved them.

Now that its been delivered, I can post. Mom bought this quilt panel and intended to make Andrew a quilt. Marlana found it and made the top. My Christmas present to her was getting it on the longarm and getting it it quilted. I found a tractor design to quilt on it. She finished it and gave it to Andrew for his birthday.

It is almost that time of year where girls will be shopping for prom dresses. Here are a few things to keep in mind while looking for that perfect dress in regards to alterations:

1) a size too big is better than a size too small. I can make the dress smaller. Most dresses do not have seams to let out. I cannot make it bigger.

2)if the zipper does not go up, its too small. If the dresses bunches up at the waist in the back, its too small. Just because you can get into the dress does not mean it fits. Can I replace the zipper with a corset back? Yes, but remember that's another $60 cost added to the dress.

3)if it too long, it needs to be hemmed. That's generally an easy fix, but another added cost to the dress...count the layers of the skirt and think $15 to $20 a layer. Some hems have horsehair braid. Its a plastic strip at the bottom that helps the fullness of the skirt stand out. Yes, it can be moved up, it just takes a little more time and patience. That increases your cost.

4) if it has sequins and/or glitter, it increases the cost of alterations. Sequins dulls needles, so my needle is now a one use and done. Needles are not cheap anymore. Glitter and sequins also shed worse than cats and dogs losing their winter coat. It gets in my machines and leaves "sparkle dust" every where. Then I have to spend a lot of 💰 on getting my machines maintained. Taking a shop vac to it doesn't get in all the little spaces.

What are you doing with that wedding gown you wore for your special day? Is it hanging in the closet? Stored in a box under the bed? Saving it for your daughter to wear? Let's be honest...our daughters will have their own style in mind and probably won't want to wear your dress when she gets married. Mine took one look at my dress and said "What were you thinking?"

So...let's get those dresses out of the closets and out from under the bed and let's repurpose them! Christening gown, dressing robe for your daughter's wedding day, rehearsal dress for your daughter to wear at her wedding rehearsal, or a first communion dress!

This dress came last night to be turned into a first communion dress for her daughter. Im excited to see what this dress becomes! Already have a couple of ideas! So stay tuned!

To all my Crown drinking friends... Crown now has a chocolate flavor! Anyone willing to give me their bags? I'm thinking a fall colored quilt and I'll need more than one bag. Let me know if you are willing to part with the bag...or any of the other fall colors...or any blackberry bags. If you haven't tried the new chocolate, I promise its pretty tasty!

Time to post what I've been up to! Recently a mother of a bride brought her mother to me for a dress alteration. She asked about making a robe out of her wedding gown from 30+ years ago. I told I hadn't made one yet, but I've done christening gowns. A couple days later she shows up with her gown and wanted a robe and a christening gown. There was plenty of dress for both with three tiers of ruffles! (Back in the 90s, we liked our tiers of ruffles! Did you see my dress? 😆)

So after some seam ripper therapy and a trip to the dry cleaners, I had a plan. Then I started laying out pattern pieces and plans changed and evolved. Reusing the sleeves from the dress wasn't going to work like I planned. So taking off the appliques and putting them on new sleeves happened. The skirt for the christening gown changed from my original idea to something better.

Last week grandma picked up the robe and dress to take them to the wedding. This was a fun project.

Let's talk coat zippers. I have replaced the zipper in this coat once already. That was about 7 or 8 years ago. Not sure how long he had the coat before that, but it had been a while. Now, the zipper has worn out and he needs a new one again.

Now, this is a warm coat that he loves and to replace this coat would cost probably $75 to $100. To replace the zipper, the cost is $35. So for $35, this coat will probably last another 7 to 8 years.

So, if you have a coat that you don't want to replace because the zipper is simply broke and needs replaced, the cost of having someone replace the zipper is generally cheaper than buying a new coat, and you will get several more seasons out of the coat.

If you're thinking that $35 for a zipper is expensive, let me explain it to you. This is not a simple job. I can't just take this one out and sew a new one in. There is a process to putting in a zipper. There is lining to consider, and there is a piece underneath the zipper to sew back in. Plus, after I put in one side, I have to make sure the other side aligns up right. If it doesn't align up right, it will not look right.

So next time your zipper breaks and needs replaced, the cost of a new zipper is cheaper than a new coat. Think about how many more seasons you'll get to wear your favorite coat.
