Getting Here, Construction and All 🚙🛍️

We know construction on I-94 has made getting around downtown a little trickier this year. Here’s the easy way in, no matter which direction you’re coming from.

Coming from the east, follow Wisconsin Avenue and turn onto St. Paul Avenue. Coming from the west, follow Clybourn Street directly onto St. Paul Avenue.

Please note, the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street/St. Paul Avenue remains closed until construction completes.

Once you’re here, you’ll find free parking right out front, up to two hours. We can’t wait to see you, construction and all.

This is a genuine antique Chinese ladies’ sedan chair, a wedding palanquin used to carry the bride to her groom’s home on her wedding day.

Rather than a modern car, the bride would travel enclosed in this ornately carved pagoda-shaped chair, hoisted on carrying poles by attendants, while a procession of family and musicians followed with drums, gongs, and firecrackers to mark the occasion.

Every panel is hand-carved and hand-painted with figures, florals, and auspicious symbols meant to bless the marriage, and the calligraphy along the doors carries poetic wishes for the couple’s future.

Just imagine the fun ways you could style this piece in your home!

Wisconsin’s own George Raab (1866-1943) spent his life capturing the light of this state, from his early training under Richard Lorenz at the Wisconsin School of Design to his studies in Weimar and Paris before returning home to help found the Society of Milwaukee Artists.

He later served as curator at the Layton Art Gallery and taught at the Milwaukee Art Students League, shaping the city’s early art scene from the inside.

We’re honored to house a growing collection of his original landscapes and portraits, each one a small window into early Wisconsin modernism. You can find George Raab pieces and other Wisconsin artists’ work here at Riverview Antique Market.

Pyrography: from the Greek pyro, meaning “fire,” and graphos, meaning “writing.”

Literally, fire writing! Around 1900, artisans took that idea and ran with it, using heated tools to hand-burn every scroll, feather, and flourish you see on this desk and chair straight into the solid wood. No paint, no stain, just fire and a steady hand.

Long before finding their way to Riverview, these animated carolers sang from a window at the former Gimbels Department Store in downtown Milwaukee, the flagship location Adam Gimbel opened in 1887 that grew into one of the city’s most beloved holiday traditions.

Gimbels was acquired in 1973 by Brown & Williamson, and the store closed for good in the 1980s, but pieces of that magic, like the trio watching over our staircase today, found their way home to Riverview Antique Market.

Stop in and see them for yourself, along with the rest of our curated collection of vintage treasures.
