So the big question…what’s next? Well, for a while I need a little break. I’ve worked so hard for Les Sól and I love it so much, and am so proud of what we built…but it’s been emotionally and physically exhausting. As far as retail and fashion, well I’m ready for a break from that too.

I have realized it’s time for me to explore other passions I’ve dreamed about, and one of those passions is photography! I’m starting small, but so excited to see where it brings me. I’ve played with photography since high school, and never really committed to it until now.

So, throughout the week, I’ll be posting some of our favorite Les Sól shots done by yours truly attached to my photo account…if you feel inclined to keep up with me after Les Sól, give that a follow please 💛✨💛

It's unfortunate to share these features...but thank you, WCCO & CBS News Minnesota, for the platform. We hope this will help other small businesses in Minneapolis get the support they need.🙏

Customers aren't "digging" the front-end loaders along one of Minneapolis' busiest corridors, and small businesses are paying the price.

The end of our Les Sól era...
Small businesses in Uptown (and across the nation) are hurting. Since 2020 (and even well before that), we feel the city hasn’t done enough to help our little slice of Minneapolis. COVID made things tricky, the economy and inflation made things trickier, and the construction in Uptown has made it the trickiest. We are sad to close our doors, but in a way, we’re relieved. And, in a weird way, we’re hoping our closing can serve as a reminder to the city that more needs to be done to help other small businesses.
-----
This decision was not an easy one to make and it is happening way sooner than we expected…but it is time. I am so so proud of what Megs and I created together with the help of the truly beautiful community we have built, and I will always be grateful for the experiences and people we’ve met along this journey.

The truth is that owning a business, any business, is not easy. I knew It wouldn’t be but it was so much harder than I anticipated, and unfortunately it just kept getting harder. I have barely paid myself in four years, and with all the changes in the retail atmosphere, we didn’t see that changing at any point soon. We did not go into this with the intention of making a ton of money, but of course it’s not sustainable if you can’t pay yourself.

It feels as if the world doesn’t care for small business at this moment. We are sadly not alone in this plight. So many are struggling, and it sucks. It sucks even more when corporate greed inflates prices on everything, forcing more people to live from paycheck to paycheck. I get it, most of us really can’t afford to be spending money on clothing from a small, ethically minded boutique. But, at the same time, many can and choose to only support Amazon, Shein, and several other unethical companies.
I simply can’t fu***ng take one more person who comes in here laughing at prices, followed by saying they can get It cheaper online right In front of me. It’s insulting to myself as a business owner, and it’s insulting to the many independent artists and makers in our supply chain who are attempting to make a living through slow fashion. If that’s harsh sorry…I’m not In the mood to be gentle with this.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm sick of It. I am sick of overconsumption, constant sales, and begging people to buy things. The whole late stage capitalism, and the complete disregard for each other and the earth is depressing.

And we just had to call it. I am so sorry to the amazing artists, brands and makers we have gotten to know throughout the years, we fully Intend to support you all In the future and uplift you always.

We love you and are so thankful for all of you. 💛

Today I want to appreciate the mothers who make Les Sól what it is. To our customers, to the designers and artists and especially to co-owner Megan Harrod and our Mom. This is Megan’s first official Mother’s Day with baby Pierce, but she was made a mom by her first, little baby boy Oliver who left this earth very early in his life, but she was a mom far before that, when I was born Megs was 12 and with our own mom working so hard as a Midwife, Megs became another mom to me. I was blessed with so many mother figures in my life, but Megan’s influence as a big sister and nurturer made me who I am today. Watching her with Pierce has absolutely been one of the most beautiful things in life, and I can’t wait to see and be there for her and Megs with whatever life brings. And to our mother, who sacrificed and worked so hard for what we are able to have today. I am so appreciative and full of awe for these women.

As we appreciate and love on the mothers in our life, we need to think of the mothers and families across the world where genocide is happening. So many mothers have lost their babies, babies loosing mothers for the sake of nothing but greed, and violence. Today we stand with the families all over the world who don’t get to celebrate today, in the Congo, in Gaza and Sudan and so many other places.

Xoxo, Mikaela
