A simple seed often treated as waste is now at the center of an award-winning water innovation.
Sixteen-year-olds Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal, and Avyana Mehta from India have been named Global Winners of The Earth Prize for Plas-Stick, a microplastic-removal project built around powdered tamarind seeds. Good News Network reported that the team had already won a major Asian science prize before receiving the global honor in Geneva.
Their idea uses natural compounds in tamarind seed powder to help tiny plastic particles clump together. After a short agitation period, the microplastic-tamarind mass can be removed with a handheld magnet. The students designed the biodegradable powder for shared water containers, especially in places without access to advanced filtration systems.
Tamarind is widely used in South Asian cooking and in food traditions across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Its pulp is used in sauces, drinks, candies, and seasonings, while the hard seeds are often discarded. This project shows how familiar natural materials can be studied in new ways, especially when communities are looking for practical, low-cost tools.
Microplastics are difficult to remove because they can be extremely small and remain suspended in water. They have been found in remote environments and reported in human tissues, while scientists continue to study their long-term health effects. Globally, more than 2.2 billion people lack safely managed drinking water infrastructure, making simple water-treatment ideas an important area of research.
The students said being the first team from India to receive the Global Winner recognition felt “surreal and deeply motivating.” They now hope to expand Plas-Stick through decentralized production hubs and reach more rural communities.
